CENTRAL ORDER OF LENIN INSTITL~'z OF HEMATOLOGY AND BLOOD TRANSFUSION
Cand Med Sci I. I. Zaretskiy osco_w
An All-Union Scientific S:?ssion on Problems of Hematology and Blood Trans-
fusion is held annually. The ;lot Extended Plenary Session of the Scientific
Council, Central Order of Lenin Institute of Hematology and Blood Transfusion,
was held at the end of May 195 Representative workers of scientific and
practical medicine as veil ac of related branches of science from 17 cities of
all republics of the USSR participated in the session. The program of the ses-
sion was devoted to the nwest, theoretical and practical achievements in the
field of hematology and blood transfusion. This program embraced a great num-
ber of very urgent problems and was directed toward the solution of immediate
problems of public health.
The reports presented at the meeting discussed concrete results in the
following fields: hematherapy of various pathological conditions, blood substi-
tutes and parenteral protein nutrition, hemopoiesis under normal and pathologi-
cal conditions, and organization of the blood-transfusion service.
Prof A. A. Bagdaaarov, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Medical
Sciences USSR, director of the. Central Order of Lenin Institute of Hematology
and Blood Transfusion, opened the session with an introductory address in which
he reviewed the basic. results of the work done during the Immediately preceding
period. He indicated the shortcomings in this work and outlined the path for
subsequent creative development it) connection with problems having theoretical,
practical, and organizational significance.
One may note with satisfaction that in recent times new successes have
been achieved in the field of hematology and blood transfusion. The organiza-
tion of scientific research on the basis of the theories of Botkin, Sechenov,
and Pavlov and of creative Soviet biology in general has contributed to these
successes.

On the basis of convio-:rig experimental data, the leading role of the
central nervous system in produ:ing the biological aspects of the effects of
blood transfusion has been demonstrated by N. A. Fedorov, I. I. Fedorov,
G. D. Gaibov, and others. As a result of the investigations which have been
conducted, it was established that the primary and principal factor in all prcc-
esses taking place In the organism subsequently to blood transfusion are changes
in the functional condition of the higher divisions of the central nervous sys-
tem. On the basis of many-_lded investigations carried out by a number of sci-
entists, functional shifts in the -ortical and subcortical areas of the cerebrum
must be regarded as apparently onnected with both automatic irritation and irri-
tation through the agency of the vascular receptors. One must recognize that
these investigations are of great significance for the creation of a contemporary,
methodologically correct theory eiplaining the mechanism of effects produced by
blood transfusion. Achievements in this field open up new rational methods for
prophylaxis and for eliminat..on of posttransfusion complications.
The report of Prof A N. Babt]lev, Active Member of the Academy of Medical
Sciences USSR, was heard with g-eat interest. This report presented new data
on the role and proper place of blood transfusion and of the transfusion of
blood components in preparatioci for surgical operations as well as in the treat-
ment during the operational and postoperational periods. Bakulev emphasized the
necessity of continuing Oct d~-talled research on defining the problem more pre-
cisely in regard to the oc?':mw dosage in transfusions, the number of transfu-
sions to be carried out, and the method to be applied.
Prof F E. Efendiyev r,ap..c presented new and important data on the appli-
cation of blood trap fusions against the background of a vagocarotid block, as
a means of averting shock aft-r major surgical interferences in the thoracic
and abdominal regions
The problems of blood transfusion and of the transfusion of blood compo-
nents in the surgical t:=arm..-n'. both of disturbances of the hemopoietic system
and of chronic osteomy'-iitir. ver- -i:scussed in interesting papers by M. D.
Patsiora and A. G. Fedots-i:- The results achieved open new possibilities
for the effective ttera;~y -)f the pathological conditions involved,
Of particular utrr*,t`i"an-r a-e problems connected with the application of
blood transfusion and of th-. ?.'anafus_on of blood components in combination
with various pharma=oiog;rails a.- ive agents which exert an influence on nerve
mechanisms. This sub'e , ha- tieen discussed in a report presented by Prof M. S.
Dul'tsin, Dul,tsin and hic -o.!_abr-:ators established that when pharmacological
agents are used to oliev;a'e ti- posttransfusion reaction, definite changes
take place in the func r enal :onditior, of organs and of systems active in the
organism. In some lases, thes agents produce a positive effect. For instance,
medium doses of bromine exert a pronounced action on the prothrombin-forming
function of the liver ., ocher lases, physiologically active agents produce
a negative effect, .Adm.r.;e,ra'ine of pantopon and atropine may be accompanied
in some cases by a reduct1o- c' the filtering capacity of the kidneys. Thus,
a discriminating approach to the administration of pharmacological agents in
combination with blood tranef:v,ions is necessary.
A. N. Nikitin 'ro1ogda,, Honorary Physician of the Republic, described
successful applicaticn or intte-arterial blood transfusions in combating termi-
nal conditions ragony'r% and clinical death.. The work of R. M. Giants (Khar'kov)
and others represents an interesting attempt to establish the significance of
internal secretion as an intermediate link in the transmission of the influence
of the cortex on functions of various organs and systems of organs during blood
transfusion. M, G. lshanova and A: Yu. Tills (Tashkent) successfully applied
in the clinic the method of plet.hysmography in order to investigate the effects
of blood transfusion on vascular reactions in patients suffering from gastroin-
testinal ulcers, in extCn',:=:00 ehatg?s in the
