OF ACADEMY OF SCIENCES USSR, 1952
The Chief Scientific Secretary of the Presidium of the Academy of Sciences
USSR stated at the annual. meeting that, in 1952, the presidium had available
for award six gold medals and 31 imeni : iscs ;named after notable scientists).
However, in view of the inefficient work of the commissions on prizes, many
entries in the competitions for medals and prizes were judged to be unsuite.b'e.
The following prizes were nc; awarded; imeni P. N. Lebedev, imeni A. Ye.Favor-
skiy, imeni A. Ye.Poray-Koshits, imeni V. G. Khlopin, imeni V. I. Vernadskiy,
imeni L. S. Berg, imeni A. Ye.Fersman, imeni K. A. Timiryazev, imeni V. G. Belin-
akiy, imeni IV. N. Miklukho-Maklay, imeni P. L. Chebyshev, and others. The Gold
Medal imeni V. V. Dokuchayev wds not awarded.
During 1952, the presidium awarded five gold medals and 16 imeni prizes.
Gold medals were awarded to the following:
1. Academician M. A. Leuntovich: the Gold Medal imeni A. S. Popov for
his notable works in the field of radio physics.
2. Academician N. N. Anichkov: the Gold Medal imeni I. I. Mechnikov
for his outa,.arding achieve,sents in the field of pathological physiology and.
pathological anatomy.
3. I. P. Pazenkov, Active Member of the Academy of Medical Sciences
USSR: the Uoid Medal imeni I. P. Pavlov for his prominent services in the
development of Pavlovian learning.
4. A. A. Chernov, Honored Scientist, Doctor of Geologicomineralogical
Sciences: the Gold Medal imeni A. P. Karpinskiy for a series of scientific
works in the field of geology.

It should be noted that six gold medals were to be awarded, only five
were awarded, and only four of the recipients were listed. It is possible that
the medal not mentioned is the Gold Medal imeni S. I. Vavilov, awarded for out-
standing work in the fie'd of physics

N. G. Chebotarev of 10,000 rubles for his works "The Boundary-Value Problems
for Equations With Small Parameters in the Highest Derivatives," "Second Bound-
ary Problem for Equations of the Elliptical Type With Correct Parameters in the
Highest Derivatives," and "Equations of the Elliptical Type With Small Parame-
ters in the Highest Derivatives."
2. G. V. Akimov, Corresponding Member of the Academy of Sciences USSR
(deceased), Ye. N. Paleolog, Candidate of Chemical Sciences, and G. V. Klark,
Candidate of Technical Sciences: Prize imeni D. I. Mendeleyev of 20,000 rubles
for a series of works on the electrochemistry of protective films on metals.
3. G. S. Zhdanov, Doctor of Physicomathematical Sciences, and Z. V. Zvon-
kova, Candidate of Chemical Sciences: Prize imeni D. I. Mendeleyev of 10,000

According to tradition, Academician A. N. Neameyanov, President of the
Academy of Sciences USSR, banded the winners the gold medals and diplomas of
the medals and imeni prizes awarded to them at the annual meeting of the acad-
emy.
