NOTES DEVELOPMENTS IN METAL, MINING INDUSTffiESr NEW TYPE OF BRONZE TO REPLACE BERYLLIUM -- Nachrichten Puer Aussenhandel, _ No.22~ 18 Mar 59 The people-owned enterprise Sonderbronze (special bronze), Berlin-Ober- achoeneweide, displayed a new kind oP bronze at the Leipzig Fair which is used in the manufacture oP spark-proof tools. The producer claims that this bronze is a 160-percent substitute for the formerly used beryllium. ENLARGE IRONWORKS -- Nachrichten Puer Aussenhandel, No 29, 15 Apr 56 The Doehlen Ironworks near Dresdett will be enlarged into one oP the most modern high-quality steel mills in Germany, in order to be able to satisfy the demand for all of East Germany. Production is to start early in 1951. Three electric furnaces, with capacities of 3, 5, and 10 tons, will be installed. The Pirst rolling mill ie being installed at present. FINISH NEW GIANT EXCAVATOR -- Nachrichten Puer Aussenhandel, No 29, 15 Apr 50 The Buckau-Wolf Machine Factory of the Soviet "Amo" Machine-Building Cor- poration in Magdeburg, has completed work on a giant excavator weighing 170 tons. With its 40-meter fib and a bucket holding 3.5 cubic meters, this ex- cavator can clew 200 cubic meters per hour. It will be used for brorm-coal strip mining is the Nachterstedt area. INTRODUCE NEFi MACffiNES -- Rude Pravo, No 9, 11 Jan 50 The coal. loader, which was built at the Zdenek Ne,~edly Mine at Soue (Most okres), can fill 150 carte, that is, about 11.5 carlasds, during one shift. ~NNFi~ENT~A~. The machine is equipped with rotary shovels made of rubber, which pick up mortar from a special drum and plaster the wall. The mobile machine can plaster 50 square meters of wall space per hour, and can be serviced by unskilled labor. It can plaster a wall strip 60 centimeters wide sad up to 3.5 meters high in one pick-up. A prototype is already being produced by a state enterprise. 1949 CZECH COAL PRODUCTION -- Hospodar, No 1, 5 Jan 50 A total of 17,041,150 tons of black coal and 26,523,000 tons of brown coal was mined in Czechoslovakia in 1949? REACH MAXIMUM CAPACIT't IN BROWN COAT, MINING -- Nachrichten fuer Aussenhandel, No ~0, 1} Feb 50 Maximum capacity in brown-coal strip mining and in briquette manufacture was reached during 1949 in Eaet Germany, according to Gustav Sobottka, head of the Coal Department in the Ministry for Industry. Only opening new strip mines and increasing briquette manufacturing Facilities can increase the ca- pacity. The 1949 supply of construction materiels for new mines and briquette factories did not even meet the planned allotment, which was already too low. For example, 90 percent of the allotment of pipes, 80 gercent of the allot- ment of rails and sheet metal, 60 percent of the allotment of section iron, and 50 percent of the bearing metal allotment were not actually received. In addition, there has been a shortage of electric locomotives, cars for clear- ing work, and briquette presses. Brown coal requirements in 1953 are expected to be 55 percent higher than they were in 1949. UNCOVER RICH COPPER MINE IN SANGERHAUSEN -- Taegliche Rundschau, No 116, 21 May 50 Geological investigations indicate that copper mining in the newly opened Sangerhausen district should ps~ove highly profitable. The northern section, between Wittelrode, Lengefeld, and Sangerhausen, covers an area oY approximately 6 million square meters, with a pure copper content of 65,000 tons. The southern section, between Sangerhausen, Niederroeblingen, and Ein- zigen, covers an area of .19.5 million square meters and contains approxi- mately 275,000 tons of pure copper; the ore is in veins 25-30 centimeters thick. The newly-opened deposits should be exploited promptly so that the out- put may be included in the 1951 plan 'oecause, according to Director Duemke (fnu) of the Mansfield Association of People-Owned Enterprises (VVB), the old Mansfield copper mine, located 15 kilometers from Sangerhausen, has a life expectancy of only 15 years at the present ra+,e of exploitation. It employs 16,'100 miners . DDN~lDEN~IAL ~. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/31 :CIA-RDP80-00809A000600320233-7
