2. About 200 meters from the Riga Opera House, bordered by Kaleju, Ridzenes,
and Teatra Streets, there is an air-raid shelter approximately 60 meters
long, 30 meters wide, and 4 meters high. The two main doors of sheet-
iron panels open on Kaleju Street and Ridzenes Street and are approximately
three meters high and two meters wide. There are also two smaller auxiliary
doors (1.50 meters high and 1.20 meters wide) set at an angle in the middle
of each of the other two (bides of the shelter. Five cement air shafts, with
six opeinings in each, protrude about $i0-70 centimeters from the top of the 50X1-HUM
shelter. a staircase with heavy banisters descending to a de th
of about three meters and then turning at a right angle to the left" Xl-HUM
On both sides, opposite each ma15OX1-H U M
door, two staircases to the top of the shelter were still under construction,
upon completion they will lead to two terraces
provide with benches. When o served, the shelter was still covered with fine,
gray sand and was not yet camouflaged. (See Attachment No. 1) 50X1-HUM
3. Behind the Opera House, at the intersection of Krisjana Barons Street and
Padomju Bulvaris, there is an air-raid shelter approximately 35 meters long,
15 meters wide, and 2.meters high. This shelter had only two doors--one
which opens on Padomju Bulvaris; the other in the opposite direction. These
doors, with sheet-iron panels, are similar in dimension (2 meters high and
1.50 meters wide) and placement to the auxiliary doors depicted in Attachment
1. There are two cement air shafts, each with six opanzngs, which protrude
about 60-70 centimeters from the top of the shelter. Grass covers the entire
shelter, which is so well camouflaged so as not to be discernible from the %
lawn of t-.-,e adiacent nark. and ivy covers the two air shafts. 50X1-HUM

4+. Another air-raid shelter on Radio Street, about 15 meters from the
large radio antenna, is visible from the railroad station and from the
downtown area. The shelter is approximately 30 meters long, 15 meters
wide, and 2 meters high, has two sheet.rbn, doors (2 meters high and 1.50
meters wide) set at an angle into the shelter wall, and has two cement air
shafts with six openings in each protruding 60-70 centimeters above
the shelter. a staircase descending about three meters

and then making a right-angle turn but could not estimate the shelter's
depth. However since a branch of the Daugava River is only some 20
-
meters away,

some construction difficulties must

have occurred. While grass covers;;the shelter, the camouflage is not
so good as the shelter on Padomju Bulvaris, which is probably newer.
(See Attachment No. 3)
because of the moderate capacity of the shelters50X1-H U M
and above all because of their narrow doors, these shelters were not 50X1-HUM
built for the civilian population but rather for military commands or for
selected high-priority civilian agencies. Since the shelters are located
short distancesfom each other, at least the Padomju 50X1-HUM
Bulvaris and the Radio Street shelters may be connected. (See Attachment
