THIS IS UNEVALUATED INFORMATION 52 PERCENT OF FARM FAMILIES IN COOPERATIVES; SCORE SHORTCOMINGS IN STOCK RAISINa, RECLAMATION WORT: CRITICIZES LACK OF PROGRESS IN STOCK FARMING.-- Sofia, Izgrev, 25 FPb 51 Speaking at the second congress of the Dimitrov tat..,nal Youth Aaiociation, Minister of Agriculture TItko Chernokolev stated that 52 percent of all Bulgarian farm families are now in cooperatives. However, he criticized the lack of prog- made in stock raising. Cooperatives and state farms claim only 39.2 per- cent of the nation's horses, 18..5 percent of t a beef cattle, 14.3 percent of the milch cows, 23.6 percent of the sheep, and Improper feeding and too-extensive use of straw as fodder account for the prevalent low yields. The average cow produces only 1,000 -'1,200 liters of milk, as compared with the 4,000 liters yielded 'by cows at the Sadovo State Farm. Sheep at the Vidbol Cooperative Farm yielded 100 1G.ters of milk each, as contrasted with the national average of 35-40 liters. At the cooperative farm in Slatina Village the average for each sheep was 3,.8 kilograms of wool, while the normal yield is 1.5 - 1.8 kilograms. These examples demonstrate what can be accomplished by co- operative animal husbandry and the application of good methods. SCORES INDIFFERENCE AT RECLAMATION PROJECT -- Sofia, Izgrev, 8 Mar 51 The excavation work at the reclamation project for the Brushlyan lowlands should be promptly completed. About 7,000 people from the neighboring okoliyas of Ruse, Kubrat, and Tutrakan are at work in the area. However, in spite of this and the technical aid provided by the Ruse Stroyobedinenie (Construction Associa- tion), work on the project suffers from many shortcomings. There is no representative from the investing organization (the Ministry of Agriculture). The telephone connections with Ruse are frequently out of order. For some time many installations have been short of electric power, and assembly work had to be stopped in the substations. This indifference is caused by the fact that the okoliya people's soviets, village soviets, and the Communists aid Fatherland Front members in the area are not sufficiently aware of the urgent necessity of completing the project. START COMPETITIVE WORK IN AGRICULTURE -- Sofia, Izgrev, 8 Mar 51 A plan for competitive work in crop production and livestock care has been introduced in the area of the Sofia Municipal People's Council. The competitions will be concerned with high yields, the proper measures against livestock diseases, the increase in the number of head, the improvement of breeds, and the increase of animal products. Finds assigned for cash prizes total 200,000 leva. IN' DUCE SUBTROPICAL PLANTS -- Sofia, Izgrev, 9 Mar 51 The experimental introduction of subtropical plants started 3 years ago in the vicinity of Kosti Village, Michurin Okoliya, with the planting of 200 tea shrubs. It has now been confirmed that the plants have developed satisfactorily in local climatic conditions and several thousands of these shrubs, supplied by the USSR will be planted in the area this year. During 1950, 150 eucalyptus seedlings were planted near Sozopol, at Akutino. They have grown very satis- factorily, . producing sprouts one meter high. Eucalyptus seedlings planted in Kosti Village are also in a very satisfe.ctory condition. The Rayon Forestry Department of Burgas has built a special hothouse for the production of eucalyp- tus seedlings. This establishment has also delivered 20 kilograms of bamboo seed for planting in the area. The experimental station at Pomorie is planning the planting of lemon, orange, and other southern fry trees. PREPARE FOR SPRING SOWING -- Sofia, Izgrev, 27 Feb 51 High yields are the main objective of the spring sowing campaign now under way? At present, farmers throughout the country are engaged in collecting manure and wood ashes for fertilizing; 4,300,000 kilograms of manure and 2,100,000 kilo- grams of wood ashes have been collected already.
