Colonel R. M. Stacy
Director, Intelligence Plans and Estimates Branch (INTP)
Directorate of Intelligence
US Marine Corps Arlington Annex 3135
Dear Colonel Stacy:
I would like to invite you to participate in a conference dealing with
"Balkans Regional Questions" which will be held at CIA Headquarters on'June
12 and 13. We will begin the conference at 6:30 pm June 11 with a
reception and dinner at which Ambassador Robert Barry will speak on "The
Strategic Importance of the Balkans for the United States." On June 12, we
would also like you to be our guest at a noon luncheon. In addition to
your own participation, your office is invited to send a representative to
the conference. (The size of the available meeting room dictates this
limit.)
As indicated on the attached agenda, nine outside experts on the region
will present brief remarks, followed by a panel discussion, and questions
from the audience. The purpose of the conference is to elicit the views of
these specialists on Balkan affairs at a time when the area is once more
the scene of ferment, and the potential challenges to US interests may be
increasing. The entire conference will be conducted at the confidential
level.
I would appreciate your letting our conference secretary,
know as soon as possible but no later than June 7, whether you
wrrr enable to attend and who from your organzation will be ioinin? vou.
