Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/21 : CIA-RDP90 WASHINGTON POST 21 August 1984 U.S. Bars Soviet Journalist PROVIDENCE, R.I., Aug. 20 (UPI)-A Soviet journalist has been prohibited from entering the United States for a 10-day exchange program with New England editors that began to- day at Brown University. The State Department con- firmed that A. Makarov, North American editor for the news agency Novosti, was notified more .than a week ago that his visa request had been denied. "He was given a reason for the rejection and we can't say publicly what that was," the of- ficial said, adding, "but it would be fair to speculate that the rea- 'son had to do with our security concerns." A New England editor who is a delegate to the convention with the Soviets said the group had been told that Makarov had knits with the KGB, the Soviet secret police. No formal sessions were scheduled until Tuesday when the New England Society of Newspaper Editors was to host the Soviets for breakfast and activities that include greetings from Rhode Island Gov. J. Jo- seph Garrahy. Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2010/07/21 : CIA-RDP90-00806R000200700057-0
