Dear Mr. Dulles:
September 28, 1961
.As a believer in your approach to our intelligence
problems, I was chagrined to hear over last night's news
radio program that you are leaving the organization
over which you have worked so long and hard in the face
of domestic political obstacles over which you had no
control.
However, your impending departure, I think, makes
it all the more desirable--if you can see your way clear--
for us to get together at the earliest time convenient
to you. It is our hope that at that time you will help
us map out some possible articles that would benefit our
common cause.
I phoned your office yesterday afternoon and asked
that a message to this effect be relayed to you, so this
is merely to add emphasis. As I told your secretary when
I called, I would have gotten in touch directly with
Colonel Grogan except that he is on leave. Itis my hope
that you will be able to join me at lunch, at which I'd
like to have just one member of my staff, Kenneth Gilmore,
although whether this is advisable I would leave up to
your decision. I do have great confidence in Colonel
Grogan's advice and judgment, and if you see fit and if
he is back in town, I would of course be happy to see him
at our conference. Instead of dining up at the Cosmos
Club, I thought we might have more privacy if we went
down to a private dining room at the Mayflower. However,
if there is some place you would rather that we get together--
with or without the moment of leisure that goes with a
lunch--that'll be okay by me.
