REQUIREMENTS DATA ON MAJNTEWCE AND EXTENSION OF TRACK STRUCTURE (3 pp; German; 1952)
This document consists of photostats of three typewritten pages containing
information about current and planned maintenance and extension of the track
?t structure. No issuing agency is given.
Point I of the document analyses the present condition of the track structure.
The 1952 production program has provided 100 million Deutsche marks for the mainte-
nance of the rail network and 23 million Deutsche marks for new trackage. The
following capacity exists at present: 480 section shops (with 11,880 laborers),
23 track construction trains (with 1,380 laborers), six switch construction trains
(with 240 laborers), eight reconditioning plants for track structure, three switch
factories and 2 tie factories.
The document notes that the two outstanding features about track construction
are manual labor and the use of reclaimed material. Capacity is restricted by the
limited supply of materials. The annual capacity of switch construction plants is
3,000 switch units. The following Supplies are needed annual for smooth operation
of maintenance and extension of the track net: 75,000 tons of rails; 40,000 tons
of rail fastenings; 1,350,000 ties; 2,000 switches.
Point II of the document lists the intended production level. Tr?h Five-Year-
Plan provides for the replacement of 2,300 kilometers of track and 6,000 switches.
By 1952 110 kilometers of track and 300 switches will have been replaced. In
order to fulfill the give-Year-Plan the report makes several suggestions such as:
mechanization of track structure work (production, shipping and installation); in-
crease of reclaiming capacity (material for track structure by 35 percent, switches
by 25 percent). The report concludeal with four prerequisites to achieve the de-
aired mechanization and increase in capacity: 1. Normal rail output for the Reichs-
bahn must be increased; 2. rolling mills producing switches must receive the necessary
rollers; 3. the Reichsbahn must receive ample material for switch production; 4.
reinforced concrete ties must be developed and then produced in sufficient quantity
(at least 1 million per year).
