Reference is made to correspondence dated 19 October
1987 from Mr. R. Marc Nuttle, Campaign Director, Americans for
Robertson for President Committee, and my``response dated
29 October 1987, copies of which were~~provided for your
information. This correspondence related to a forged
memorandum, the substance of which was to orchestrate a "dirty
tricks" campaign against Mr. Robertson.
In connection with thi's matter, we have been advised by
the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) that an individual
has confessed to imp~ersonating an officer of the Central
Intelligence Agency/(CIA). This individual, who met with staff
members of the A~tericans for Robertson Committee, and another
associated with/him, have admitted that they have no current or
past associat-ion with the CIA. Our records bear this out. The
motivationiof these individuals is unknown to us at this time.
Th-~ FBI has advised that the case will be presented shortly
to an~Assistant United States Attorney for a decision regarding
cr~inal prosecution. This Agency appreciates the efforts of
the FBI agents in bringing this matter to a speedy resolution
and stands ready to cooperate in any subsequent legal
proceedings.
