1. Col. General Pavel Ivanovich Batov, Commander of the Carpathian Military District,
headed a staff group of 100 senior officers and generals which conducted a
survey of Hungarian "Districts" for military purposes. This survey consisted
of studies of the area and of transportation systems. The following are among
those officers who participated in the survey: Col. General Filip~Ivanovich
Go.likov, Commander of the Soviet Army units in Rumania;. a representative of
the Commanding General of the Soviet Central Group of Forces in-Austria; the
Commander of a Soviet Air Army; representatives of Soviet troop formations in
Hungary;;: and an unidentified Hungarian general.
2. Some members of the group were billeted in a school located in a town west,
of Budapest because all of the hotels in the town were filled. So"rce did not
remember the name of the town, but it began with the letter 'D*t..
3. There was a rumor that Soviet troops in Hungary and Rumania will be
subordinate to the command of the Carpathian Military District and that troops
which are withdrawn from Austria to Hungary after the dissolution-of the Central
Group of Forces there, will also be subordinate to the Carpathian Military
District.
