: Special Meeting on the Alaska Earthquake
1. Thank you for the opportunity to attend the special set
of lectures on the Alaska earthquake, sponsored by the American
Society of Photogrammetry and other scientific groups in Washington.
2. The lectures overlapped nicely but were not repetitious.
Each speaker illustrated his discourse with slides, including
diagrams, maps, and low oblique aerial photographs. There was no
overflight series. Mr. Gates description included the geologic
background, a summary of the several types of earth movement
involved, comparisons of damage to various kinds of manmade struc-
tures, and the plans for rehabilitation of Alaska.
3. The proposed operational programs of both the Coast and
Geodetic Survey and the Geological Survey were outlined. Charts
of both land and sea areas are to be reproduced after programs of
precise leveling are completed.
