I have the honor to report, as of possible interest to the Foreign Service Institute and the Translating Division, the existence of Pertain lexicographic material on the Tibetan language. Sir S. J. Oould (former Political Officer in Sikkim, now retired and believed to be living in )gland) and 4 H. Richardson (an Englishmont currently in charge of the R. /ndian Mission in Lhasa, but vho will croon be replaced) ' have prepared a series of textbooks and phonograph records! to facilitate the study of Tibetan. Gould and Richardson possibly know as much about Tihet and its laneuage as any non-Tibetan. There are four books and seven rocords (four double-sided and three sintjo-oided). The books cost about $4050 and the records about t7.40,-4 packing and postage are extru. This set can be purchased frog+ the abet Mirror Press, Kaltmpong, Wost Bontal, India. Two other dictionaries, which may be centioned, are the one( published by the Government of India some years ago, and the colloquial dictionary and grammar published by Sir Charles Bell. Both of these are now out of print but undoubtedly could he located either in India or in London, Mt. Tharchin4 the proprietor of the Tibet Mirror Press, states that for seven1Wcanyears he has been preparing a dictionary of Tibetan words defined in other Tibetan words. It is now almost finished and contains about 50,000 words in 2,511 psges else 100 by 7,0. For lack of funds, he has been wable to arrange for its publication, but he is hopeful that it can be done during his lifetime. It is not known whether MP. Tharehin would permit this magnum opus to be micro-fid, but au overture will be made if the Department is interested. Another possible source would be the mennseripts left Or the American scholar, Dr. Theos C. Bernard, who was pro. sumably killed in the Inlu Valley in September 1947.
