SLBJECT: Symposium on Women's Issues
1. Action Requested:
a. Request that you sign the attached letter which formally invites
Senator Nancy L. Kassebaum to be the keynote speaker for the upcoming CIA
Symposium on Women's Issues (TAB A). The Office of Equal Employment
Opportunity has scheduled the program in the Headquarters Auditorium to
begin at 0900 hours, on 14 October 1987.
b. Request you ask the DCI to meet with Senator Kassebaum in his office
at 0845 on the morning of the program, escort her to the auditorium at 0855,
and say a few words of introduction to kick off this occasion. (The DCI's
secretary has been given the information on this event.)
2. B ccg ound:
a. The OEEO has been in touch with Ms. Ann Shirley, Staff Assistant to
Senator Kassebaum, who encouraged us to extend the invitation and feels the
Senator will give a quick affirmative response.
b. The proposed conference is intended to help Agency professional,
technical, and clerical women focus more clearly on their career choices.
The agenda will reflect the changing role of women in today's society, the
obstacles they face in the work place and, for many, the challenge of
balancing responsibilities at work with their jobs as homemakers. We expect
300 to 500 employees to attend.
c. A suggested text is being prepared for you by the Office of Public
Affairs. The symposium will continue for the entire day, and we would be
pleased to have you stay as long as your schedule permits.
d. A brief biographic sketch on the career of Senator Kassebaum and
agenda are attached at TAB B.

The Central Intelligence Agency is planning a one day symposium on women's
issues to be held on 14 October 1987 in our Headquarters Building Auditorium
at Langley, Virginia. On behalf of the Director of Central Intelligence,
Judge William H. Webster, I would like to extend this formal invitation to you
to be the "Keynote" speaker for this occasion. I know yours is a very busy
schedule but we would be honored by your participation.
The symposium is intended to help Agency women employees focus more
clearly on their career choices. The agenda will reflect the changing role of
women in today's society, the obstacles they face in the work place and for
many, the challenge of balancing responsibilities at work and in the home.
We expect some 300 to 500 employees to attend.
The program will consist of the keynote address followed by presentations
by guest speakers, discussion groups, and a panel of CIA executive level
women. We would like you to speak 30 to 45 minutes beginning at 0915,
followed by a short question and answer period. You are welcomed to stay for
the full program if your schedule permits. The topic of your talk would be of
your choice. Arrangements are being handled through our Women's Program
Manager, Office of Ekual Ehiployment Opportunity. She can be
