You could expect an audience of approximately 200-400 law school students, faculty and civic leaders. The proposed format is 30-45 minutes of remarks followed by 15 minutes of questions and 4nswers. You could expect some media coverage. A scholarly topic on a law-related subject is suggested for the lecture. The presentation will be submitted later for publication in the Case Western Reserve Law Review. In addition, the lecturer is asked to meet with students, faculty, alumni and guests of the Law School in classes and other gatherings. All events have traditionally been completed within a day and a half. The usual procedure is for the lecturer to arrive in the late afternoon the day before and attend a small dinner party for the major contributors to the Canary Lectureship. The next morning you are asked to teach a law class of your choosing, attend an informal luncheon which is then followed by a formal lecture. However, Mrs. Canary will accommodate whatever schedule you prefer. (See brochure opposite.) The lectureship was established in memory of the late Judge Oenary, a graduate of Case Western Reserve Law.School and a State Appellate Judge in Ohio. Previous speakers have been Judge Griffin Bell, Ambassador Kingman Brewster, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Chief Justice Warren Burger, Judge Leon Higginbotham and Judge Richard A. Posner. Since you have a heavy schedule for the next year, I recommend that you decline this invitation. A day and a half seems too lengthy a commitment for any one institution. If you agree, attached is a letter of regret to Mrs. Canary for your signature. Mrs. Nancy H. Canary Sumner Canary Lectureship 1100 National City Bank Bldg. Cleveland, Ohio 44114 Dear Mrs. Canary: Thank you for your kind invitation to be a Sumner Canary lecturer during the 1987-1988 academic year. My calendar is full of commitments that will not permit me the time to participate in the Canary Lecture series and I regret that I must decline the honor. Your speakers have been outstanding representatives of the legal profession. I commend your efforts to provide law students with the opportunity of having contact with such individuals. uiAi rAQ Distribution: STATri g - Addressee 1 - DDCI 1 - D/ExStaff 1 - PAfl R7_nno STAT 1 1 - PAO Chrono 1 - PAO Ames 1 - MED (Subject) 26Aug87 Sincerely yours, lsl wpm H. Cleveland, Ohio '411? 216/566-5500 July 9, 1987 Judge William H. Webster Director Central Intelligence Agency Washington, DC 20505 Dear Jt,dge Webster: I am pleased to write that I have been authorized by the Canary Lectureship Committee of Case Western Reserve University School of Law to invite you to be a Canary lec- turer during the 1987-88 academic year. The Canary Lecture series is a particularly important event in the Law School and has been filled by a list of distinguished participants. Among them are Judge Griffin Bell, Ambassador Kingman Brewster, Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, Chief Justice Warren Burger, Judge Leon Higginbotham and Judge Richard A. Posner. Justice Scalia has agreed to come during the 1988-89 academic year. The lectureship was established in memory of my husband, Sumner Canary, who died in 1979 and who was a graduate of Case Western Reserve Law School and a State Appellate Judge in Ohio. Fitting to the occasion as an important event in the academic life of the Law School each year, we ask that the lecture be a scholarly contribution on a law-related subject. Thus, a condition of the lecture is that it also be submitted for publication in the Case Western Reserve Law Review. In addition, the lecturer is asked to meet with students, faculty, alumni and guests of the Law School in classes and other gatherings. A brochure describing the lecture series is enclosed. The honorarium for the Canary Lecture is $5,000.00 plus expenses. We would be pleased if Mrs. Webster accompanied you, and we would, of course, also pay her expenses. With a fair amount of lead time, we can set the date of the lecture to accommodate your schedule. Webster July 9, 1987 practice has been to complete all the events within a day or a day and a half. The fall of 1987, for example, would be a fitting time if your schedule permits, but we can be quite flexible. Our only limitation is that the lecture occur during the academic year. I hope very much that you can accept this invitation. We would be honored and pleased to welcome you to the campus.
