TOP SECRET RUFF
IN THE SAMARKAND AREA, USSR
1. This report describes three communications facilities in the Samarkand
area which contain a variety of antenna types serving troposcatter, microwave,
and high frequency (HF) communications links.
2. The three facilities listed below were covered by high-resolution
KEYHOLE photography of fair-to-good interpretability. Orientations of antennas

The facility (Figure 2), located 2.5 nautical miles (nm) northeast
of Samarkand, USSR, contains two TWIN DISH troposcatter antennas with orientations
of 222 degrees, one possible R-400 micorwave antenna, six FORK REST antennas,
at least nine horizontal dipole antennas, and six masts supporting unidentified
antennas. Two building-mounted possible ONE EYE radars and two BAR LOCK radars
are located 0.3 nm north-northwest of the communications area.

The facility (Figure 3), located 3 nm south of Samarkand, USSR,
contains two R-60210 solid dish microwave antennas-with orientations of 310 de-
grees and a tower with probable periscopic reflector elements. One ROCK CAKE/
STONE CAKE radar and one FORK REST antenna were in a separate area, 0.25 nm south-
east of the communications area. One BAR LOCK radar, one SQUAT EYE radar, and
one FLAT FACE radar were in a second area, 0.27 nm east of the communications
area.
