1 TOP SECRET RUFF
PROBABLE TV/MICROWAVE RELAY LINE BETWEEN ARMAVIR AND MAKHACHKALA, USSR
1. A photographic search for a TV/microwave radio-relay line ex-
tending from Armavir to'Makhachkala, USSR, revealed the existence of towers
at eight separate locations listed below (Figure 1). This report contains
a description of each tower, a location map, a photograph of one of the
towers, and mensuration of the height of each tower.
2. Microwave antenna dishes were observed only at the Stavropol TV/
Microwave Facility which contained two towers, one of which had a probable
R60/120 microwave antenna dish mounted on it. The self-supporting lattice
steel tower with the probable R60/120 microwave antenna dish was similar
to the TV tower at Nalchik (Figure 2). A second unmounted R60/120 micro-
wave antenna dish was observed on the ground within the support area of
the Stavropol facility.
3. Six of the other locations had microwave signatures (a control
building and fenced area), but antennas could not be seen. The support
features for the remaining location were not completed; therefore this
location did not have all the microwave signatures.
4. The entire search area was covered on KH-4 photography of good
interpretability, and the cities of Armavir, Stavropol, Nalchik,
Ordzhonikidze, Groznyy, and Makhachkala were observed
of good interpretability. All measurements are accurate to within the
limitations indicated, with a 95% confidence level.

This self-supporting lattice steel tower cast a shadow which in-
dicated a probable R60/120 microwave antenna dish. The tower was within
a secured area which also contained a control building and three small
support buildings.

This guyed lattice steel tower was located immediately east of
Tower No 1 and adjacent to a small support facility. An R60/120 microwave
antenna dish was on the ground within the support area.
