PROBABLE SYRIAN COUNTER-ANTIRADIATION MISSILE TACTICS
SYRIA-LEBANON BORDER SAM SITE S25
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: PROBABLE SYRIAN TACTICS TO COUNTER
THE ISRAELI ANTIRADIATION MISSILE (ARM) THREAT HAVE BEEN
IDENTIFIED.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: THE PRESENCE
OF TWO S~ SURF - - MISSILE SAM - ASSOCIATED
STRAIGHT FLUSH TRACKING AND GUIDANCE RADARS AT AN OCCUPIED
SAM SITE NEAR THE SYRIA-LEBANON BORDER. THE TWO STRAIGHT
FLUSH RADARS, DEPLOYED 95 METERS APART, WERE AT
SYRIA-LEBANON BORDER SAM SITE S25. A NORMAL COMPLEMENT OF
FOUR SA-6 TRANSPORTER-ERECTOR-LAUNCHERS WERE ALSO DEPLOYED
AT THE SITE. THE HIGHLY UNUSUAL DEPLOYMENT OF THESE TWO
RADARS AT ONE SITE SUGGESTS THAT THE SYRIANS, PROBABLY WITH
SOVIET GUIDANCE, HAVE EMPLOYED TACTICS TO COUNTER THE
ISRAELI ARM WHICH WAS SO SUCCESSFUL AGAINST SYRIAN SAM
BATTALIONS DURING THE ATTACKS OF 9 TO `11 JUNE.
(S/D) ANALYST'S COMMENTS: THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE TWO
STRAIGHT FLUSH RADARS SUGGEST A SYRIAN ATTEMPT TO INDUCE AN
EFFECT, DESIGNED TO CONFUSE AN INCOMING MISSILE, TERMED
"ARM CENTROID HOMING", IN THE EVENT OF ANOTHER ISRAELI
ATTACK ON SYRIAN SAM SITES. "ARM CENTROID HOMING" IS
INDUCED WHEN TWO TRACKING AND GUIDANCE RADARS, IN CLOSE
PROXIMITY TO ONE ANOTHER, EMIT SIMULTANEOUSLY OR
ALTERNATELY (BLINK). IN THEORY, THESE CONDITIONS MAY CAUSE
AN INCOMING MISSILE TO IMPACT BETWEEN THE TWO RADARS RATHER
THAN 0?d ONE OR THE OTHER .
(SECRET COLLATERAL SOURCES HAVE
REVEALS H FLUSH RADAR EMISSIONS HAVE BEEN
INTERCEPTED FROM SITE S25 TO DATE. THIS SUGGESTS A SYRIAN
INTENTION TO DENY THE ISRAELIS THE SPECIFIC AND UNIQUE

RADAR PARAMETERS OF THE TWO STRAIGHT FLUSH RADARS AT SITE
SITE S25. IN THE PAST, OBTAINING SPECIFIC AND UNIQUE
PARAMETERS OF SYRIAN MISSILE-RELATED RADARS ENABLED THE
ISRAELIS TO "FINGERPRINT" EACH RADAR, THEREBY ENHANCING THE
EFFECTIVENESS OF THE MISSILES DURING THE STRIKES.
(S/D) TO DATE, THE PROBABLE SYRIAN TACTIC TO INDUCE "ARM
CENTROID HOMING" HAS ONLY BEEN OBSERVED AT THIS SITE. A
FUTURE INCREASED APPLICATION OF THIS TECHNIQUE, ALONG WITH
A CONTINUING DENIAL OF SPECIFIC TRACKING AND GUIDANCE RADAR
"FINGERPRINTS", COULD ENHANCE THE SURVIVABILITY OF SYRIAN
