NEW PROBABLE COMBATANT UNDER CONSTRUCTION
KALININGRAD SHIPYARD STATE 820, USSR (S)
1. (TSR) A new probable combatant is under construction at Kaliningrad Shipyard State
820 USSR. Analysis of this hull, which is under construction on the open
buildingway at reporting position (RP) 81, reveals noticeable differences in the construction proc-
ess between this hull and the Krivak guided missile frigate (FFG) hulls previously constructed at
RPs 8, 9, and 10. Because of these differences, the NPIC interim designator 820E has been
assigned to this hull.
2. (TSR) Construction on this hull started in the engineering spaces (Figure 1). Four access
openings to the tankage area were first observed in July and August 1980. Three distinct compart-
ments, (measured from stern to bow), respectively, were
visible in September. Similar compartments were not observed during Krivak construction.
probable machinery access openings were discernible in the hull which were different
from those seen during Krivak construction (Figure 2). The beam of the 820E is approximately 14
meters. While it is not possible at this stage of construction to give an overall length for the 820E,
the keel block length
3. (S/D) RP 8 was last occupied by a Krivak this
Krivak had been moved to RP 10 and was launched Both RPs 8 and 10 were
then cleared before construction began on the 820E. Similar clearing of the buildingways did not
occur between the Krivak-I and Krivak-II building programs, further suggesting that the 820E
represents a new construction program.
4. (TSR) The dimensional limitations of the buildingways (RPs 8, 9, and 10) make them
incompatible with other new surface combatants currently being constructed in Soviet yards. The
maximum ship beam which can be accommodated on the buildingways (taking into account crane
clearance and scaffolding) is 14 to 15 meters. The Kirov nuclear-powered guided missile cruiser
(CGN), the Sovremennyy guided missile cruiser (CG), the Udaloy CG, and the 445F* all have'
beams in excess of 15 meters. At this time, the new program seems to be unique to this shipyard.
*Interim NPIC designator.
