MAZAR E SHARIF SOVIET B AFGHANISTAN
1. (S/D) SIGNIFICANCE: THIS NEW SOVIET DEPLOYMENT IS ONE OF
SEVERAL SM S RITY DETACHMENTS THAT HAVE RECENTLY BEEN
DEPLOYED INTO NORTHERN AFGHANISTAN TO MAINTAIN LOCAL SECURITY,
AND TO RELEASE SOVIET GROUND COMBAT UNITS FOR FIELD OPERATIONS.
2. (S/D) REMARKS: A SOVIET BATTALION-SIZED SECURITY DETACHMENT IS
NEWLY TM=IED BIVOUACKED SOUTH OF MAZAR E SHARIF.
THE ROAD-SERVED BIVOUAC AREA CONSISTS OF A TENT CAMP, PERSONNEL
TRENCHING IN A DEFENSIVE PERIMETER, AND A DOUBLE-SECURITY
FENCE. EQUIPMENT INCLUDES ONE PROBABLE ARMORED PERSONNEL
CARRIER (APC), 18 GAZ-66-TYPE TRUCKS, TEN TRUCKS, 19 LARGE
TENTS. AND THREE SMALL TENTS. THE BIVOUAC WAS 14OT PRESENT ON
A SMALLER SOVIET DETACHMENT-IS BIVOUACKED 1 NM TO THE NORTH
WITHIN A WALLED COMPOUND ON THE EAST EDGE OF MAZAR E SHARIF
CITY. EQUIPMENT INCLUDES 11 SMALL VEHICLES AND EIGHT LARGE
TENTS (NOT ON GRAPHIC).
