This report includes information on the status of SA-2 missile facilities in North Korea derived from KEYHOLE photography obtained between 25X1 The report contains text, two location maps, our 25X1 photographs, and two tables. 2. Since the fall of 1971 North Korea has expanded its SA-2 missile forces from a limited point defense of strategic areas to almost complete peripheral coverage of the country. Significant developments observed on photography between April 1972 and February 1973 are the identification of two new SA-2 sites, the occupation of four previously identified sites, the identification of three new SA-2 support facilities, the construction of concrete-lined, drive- through vehicle storage buildings at four SA-2 support facilities, and the iden- tification of four new alternate SA-2 sites. By February 1973 active, occupied SA-2 sites in North Korea had increased to 34 with nine support facilities (Tables 1 and 2). This represents an increase of six occupied sites and three support facilities since April 1972 or an increase of 20 sites and five support facilities since the fall of 1971 (Figures 1 and 2). These are Hoeyang A10-2 I (Figure 3), a 25X1 three-position site which is just north of the demilitarized zone (DMZ), and Kanggye A09-2 , 19 nautical miles (nm) southeast of the Sino- 25X1 Korean border. 4. Four alternate SA-2 sites were also identified during this period. All were between four and nine nm from existing permanent sites at Kunson A01-2 Taechon A27-2 Hungnam A25-2 and Pyongyang C29-2 . These alternate sites (Figure 4) were typical of field expedient sites. Partially revetted launch positions were observed at only two of the sites. A full complement of equipment was never observed at these sites, and the equipment was subsequently returned to its respective permanent site. This activity probably represented a training/mobil- ity exercise. 6. Two of the old SA-2 sites, Pyongyang C29-2 and Sariwon C10-2 were observed to be unoccupied on photography respectively. However, they were reoccupied on subsequent coverage. 7. Construction of concrete-lined, drive-through vehicle storage build- ings was observed at the SA-2 support facilities at Hamhung (Figure 5), Anak- up, Kangso, and Pukchong during the period. Similar construction has been observed at several armor installations and may represent a new trend in the North Korean vehicle storage concepts. 8. Pyongyang SAM Site A35-2I I was observed on photo- graph This site, previously unoccupied and unre- vetted, now consists of three occupied revetted launch positions and a central guidance area. Nearby, Pyongyang SAM Site A33-2 , a field deployed site, was observed on coverage of the same data and was unoccupied. Its status had not changed on subsequent observations. It is believed to have been abandoned in favor of the A35-2 site. 9. Many North Korean SA-2 sites are situated in terrain which precludes a conventional layout. Figure 6 shows one of these terrain-dominated configura- tions. 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 25X1 10. Hukkyo-ri SAM Training/ Support Facility apparently 25X1 has been abandoned. No SAM-related equipment has been observed here since This was one of the two locations where large 25X1 quantities of SA-2 equipment was observed in the fall of 1971. -5- TOP SFfRFT RIIFF Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/09: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000300010032-3 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/09: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000300010032-3 Iq Next 2 Page(s) In Document Denied Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/09: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000300010032-3 Sanitized Copy Approved for Release 2011/08/09: CIA-RDP78TO5162A000300010032-3 TAP CFrRFT RIIFF 11. Construction on Changjin-up SAM Site A23-2 to have stopped. The site, newly identified on photography was in the mid-stage of construction. No change in status was observed on subsequent coverage acquired 12. All but three North Korean SA-2 battalions are deployed in six-posi- tion sites. The three exceptions are just north of the DMZ and are three-position sites. The normal complement of equipment of a battalion consists of six launchers (two loaded with missiles), seven missile transporters, a FAN SONG guidance radar, and an acquisition radar. The three-position sites maintain an inventory of only three launchers (two loaded with missiles), three or four missile transporters, and a FAN SONG radar. NPIC.
