EXPANSION OF AMMUNITION AND EXPLOSIVES
STORAGE FACILITIES, IRAQ
n r'/A

25X1
1. An increase in the number and size of ammunition and explosives storage facilities in Iraq
was observed on KEYHOLE photography between January 1972 and July 1973. The increase was
a result of the construction of new facilities and the expansion of previously existing facilities. This
report includes a description of the new facilities, a table and map presenting the status and locations
of all facilities, and photographs of selected ammunition and explosives storage facilities.
2. Ammunition and explosives storage facilities directly associated with airfields or with such
commercial activities as mines and quarries are not included in this report.
3. As of January 1972 a total of 20 ammunition and explosives storage facilities had been
identified in Iraq. One of these was being expanded. Analysis of imagery from January 1972 25X1
through July 1973 revealed that four new facilities were under constructia25X1
and nine facilities were being expanded.
4. Only the four ammunition and explosives storage facilities which were constructed between
January 1972 and July 1973 are described in this report. The status and locations of all 24 facilities
are summarized in Table 1 and Figure 1. Table 1 also presents the BE number and geographic
coordinates of each facility.
5. Iraq has increased the number and size of its ammunition and explosives storage facilities
since January 1972. As of July 1973 four new facilities were added and nine were being expanded.
Two of the new facilities, Hamdi Al Pachachi Explosives Storage Facility and Tikrit Ammunition
Depot, are illustrated in Figures 2 and 3. Figures 4 and 5 illustrate two of the facilities being expanded,
Khan Al Maliawil Barracks and Ammunition Depot and Al Mawsil Ammunition Depot.
6. Three types of standard Iraqi storage structures were observed in the installations discussed
in this report. These structures and their approximate measurements are as follows: small storage
bunker, usually earth covered large storage bunker, usually earth covered,[-25X1]
and revetted explosives
storage building,
7. Other revetted buildings, unrevetted buildings, and open storage revetments of various sizes
and types used for ammunition and explosives storage were also observed at some of the Iraqi
ammunition and explosives storage areas.
8. New ammunition and explosives storage facilities were identified near Baghdad, Tikrit, An
Nasiriyah, and Al Kut.
9. Hamdi Al Pachachi Explosives Storage Facility (item 15, Figure 1) is 17 nm northwest
of the center of Baghdad. It was first identified in Marc h 1973 The fence-securc25X1
facility (Figure 2) contained six revetted explosives storage buildings, one support building under
construction, and a security building.
10. Tikrit Ammunition Depot
(item
19, Figure 1) is 7 nm north-northwest of Tikrit. It was
first identified in February 1972I = The fence-secured facility (Figure 3) contained25X1
large single-entrance storage bunkers, two revetted buildings, and four support buildings. Construction
was continuing on support facilities and roads serving the bunkers.

11. An Nasiriyah Ammunition Storage Facility (item 3, Figure 1) is 5.7 nm south-southwest
of An Nasiriyali. It was first identified in April 1973 The unsecured facility contained 25X1
16 large single-entrance storage bunkers in the mid-stages of construction.
1 2. Al Kut Ammunition Storage Facility (item 7, Figure 1) is 5.6 nm cast of Al Kut. It was
first identified in July 1973 . The unsecured facility contained ten large single-entrance 25X1
storage bunkers in the initial stages of construction.
