2,. Sovetsk (55-06N, 2l?5OE), Kaliningrad Oblast, has a large food market
frequented by many black market dealers,. Market days are on Sundays and on
Tuesdays or Wednesdays.
The black market center in Kaunas (23-55N, 5L -09E) is known as the Talueka
and is located in the Viliamppl* area,
3, Black market operators frequently buy pigs in-the area around Panevizys
(`55~-Wq 2hm22E), butcher them, and take the meat to Marijampole,(5,-33N, 23-21E)
or Kaunas for disposal. Generally, a profit of 1,000 to 1,300 rubles is made
on the sale of meat from each animal.
In 1950 there was.a potato famine in the Sventoji area (56-OlN, 21-055. .
Black market dealers took advantage of this by buying truckloads of potatoes
in Marijampole and selling them around Sventoji.
British pounds, American dollars, and gold (Tsarist) rubles can be bought from
Jewish black market operators. A Leica camera can be sold for, 4,000 rubles.
Linseed oil is a readily disposable product on the black market. Regulations
require that it be produced only at government installations.. .
