An area of insurgent activity previously identified on imagery at
the southern tip of the "Parrot's Bea]'r in southeastern Cambodial has
changed significantly in the past seven months (Figure 1). The change
is highlighted by the construction of approximately 1,300 new structures
in a more remote area, while several hundred insurgent structures pre-
viously built in the marshland area adjacent to the indigenous populated
areas have been dismantled. Numerous foxholes, trenches, bunkers, and
automatic weapons (AW) positions have also been added. At the same time,
a major road and strongpoint are under construction within the area of
.insurgent activity.
In late over 2,200 insurgent structures with associated
trenching, foxholes, bunkers, and AW positions were identified from pho-
tography in the marshland areas south of Ba Thu village in the southern
tip of the Parrot's Beak. Photography of reveals an apparent
dismantling of structures on the fringe of the marshlands adjacent to the
indigenous areas (Figure o). New buildings have been constructed farther
south in the remote areas of the marshland (Figure 3). This concentrated
area of insurgency has grown considerably in the past seven months, with
an increase of approximately 800 new buildings (bringing the total to
approximately 3,000) and the addition of extensive trench networks,
numerous foxholes, AW positions, and probable storage bunkers.
There is also a new strongpoi_nt (Figure 4) and service road currently
under construction southward from a well-established Cambodian area in-Lo
the heart of the insurgent activity.
There has also been a significant increase in insurgent activity in
the border area approximately 5 nautical miles (nm) north of Ba Thu. The
building count in this area has more than doubled in the past six months.
The addition of 600 buildings brings the total count to 1,150. This area
also contains trenches, foxholes, bunkers, and AW positions.
