SAZAN ISLAND, ALBANIA
Sazan Island, approximately two and one half miles long and one mile
wide, is strategically located at the mouth of Vlone Bay, and commands the
entrance from the Adriatic Sea. The entire island is known to be under
military control, with both army and naval units stationed here as a per-
manent garrison. Defense positions include an 8-gun and two 4-gun (85-
100 mm) dual-purpose batteries and an 8-gun and one 4-gun medium (85-
100 mm) anti-aircraft battery. All of these batteries are radar-controlled.
A probable early warning TOKEN radar site. is also present. Numerous
machine gun positions, bunkers, and underground storage areas are
scattered throughout the island.
San Nicolo Harbor, on the east side of the island, is a small naval base
for three "Kronshtadt" class PC boats and a few PT boats. A 220-foot
possible transporter dock, used for underwater repairs to patrol craft, was

There is no photographic evidence of a reported submarine base or
an. underground petroleum products storage area on Sazan Island. There
has been no major construction or any apparent significant change on the
25X1 island since

x 30' to 904 x 30'.

10. Sazan Island headquarters area: two-story administration building, U-
shaped, 140' x 20' with two wings - each 401 x 20'; shop building 90' x 45';
and underground storage facilities.
11. Barracks and storage area: three barracks -type buildings,one U-sha shaped
30' x 20' with each wing 100' x 30'; one L-shaped 100'x 45' with wing 26'x
20'; and one 110' x 30' . Six storage buildings, average size 45'x. 2 ' .

13. Barracks area: one U-shaped barracks 20' x 20' with each wing 90' x
204, one building 804 x 45', one building 80' x 30', two buildings each 45'
x 30'.
