PROBABLE PRODUCTION OF STYX (SS-N-2) MISSILES
AT NANCHANG AIRFR ME PLANT 320, NANCHANG, CHINA
STYX (SS-N-2) cruise missiles are probably in production at the Nan-
chang Airframe Plant 320, Nanchang, China. Chuchou Aircraft Engine Plant
331, located approximately :L50 nm west-southwest of Plant 320, is probably
supporting production at the Nanchang Plant. Probable production of the
missiles is indicated by the presence of STYX missile crates at Plant 320
and the recent identification of a small horizontal rocket motor/engine
test cell at Plant 331. Since the late 1950s, Plants 320 and 331 have been
associated in the production of COLT (AN-2).
Nanchang Airframe Plant 320, approximately 3.5 nm southeast of
Nanchang, China, was identified as an aircraft repair and maintenance depot
I I construction of additional facilities since then has
given the plant an airframe assembly and fabrication capability. The
presence of significant and varying numbers of STYX missile crates, identi-
fied on different photographic missions between 25X1 D
indicates that the plant is probably fabricating and assembling the
completed STYX missile.
The recent identification I I of a small 25X1 D
horizontal rocket motor/engine test cell at Plant 331, which is connected
to Plant 320 by a major rail line and good roads, indicates that the plant
may also be producing and testing the propulsion system for the STYX
missile and then supplying these systems to Plant 320. The test cell is
similar in size and basic configuration to a test cell at the Izhevsk
Rocket Engine/Component Test Facility at Izhevsk, USSR.
The test cell at Plant 331 is in a new production area constructed
since the new area is separately secured from the main area
used for the production of aircraft engines and consists of a large assem-
bly building, four assembly/shop buildings, a drive-through building, a
laboratory/engineering building, and a small secured storage building. A
separately secured test section of the production area contains the test
cell and seven well-dispersed, probably associated, buildings. The test
cell is believed to be used for testing (at sea level) small liquid engines
and could also be used to test small solid motors.
