NPIC Project J-244/63 This rail-served, active steel plant, ap- proximately 0.8 sq mi .in area, is situated on both sides of the Hanchon Chon (river) approximately 2.5 nm NNE of Songjin. Plant facilities, although heavily damaged during the Korean War, have been rehabilitated and are undergoing expansion, as shown in Figure 1. The main plant area, located south of the river, contains an open-hearth furnace build- ing (850 x 65 ft) probably with 4open-hearth furnaces, 5 probable rolling mill buildings (varying in size from 290 x 90 ft to 570 x 265 ft), a storage/shipping building (620 x 115 ft), a thermal electric power plant, maintenance and administrative areas, and an open storage area with 7 gantry cranes. The area north of the river comprises a small plant with 5 processing buildings (one large foundry-type building constructed since _ a rail-served open storage area with 5 gantry cranes (3 being erected), and an extensive area of new construction with one nearly completed T-shaped probable rolling mill (730 x 70 and 255 x 130 ft), a T-shaped probable rolling mill (540 x 155 and 255 x 130 ft) in early stages of construction, and miscella- neous excavations, possibly for additional build- ings. The absence of ore, coke, limestone, and blast furnaces indicates that the plant is pro- ducing only finished steel products. FIGURE 1 . SONGJIN IRON AND STEEL PLANT, NORTH KOREA SECRET
