Launch Area No 3 was next seen in -
but because of snow cover the only -
change discernible was some new road scarring
in the site support facility. Launch Area No 1
was in the late stage of construction and Launch
Area No 2 was in the early to midstage of con-
struction. The complex was again covered in
but heavy clouds and
haze precluded detailed interpretation. The next
coverage of the area was in
when one launch silo, excavations for
two other silos, and construction around the
control bunker were present. The site support
facility had expanded to include eight buildings.
Launch Area No 1 was now complete and Launch
Area No 2 was in the mid- to late stage of con-
struction. The fixed field site showed no changes.
When next covered in
the launch. site contained three launch

Launch Area No 3 lies in the center of a
small, heavily wooded area at an approximate
elevation of 650 feet. The surrounding terrain
is hilly and rolling. An improved probably
all-weather road connects the area directly with
the probable complex rail-to-road transfer
point, 3.5 rim to the northeast, and with Smor-
gon. The probable rail-to-road transfer point
is a railyard 0.8 nm southwest of Sm argon along
the main line connecting Smorgon and Vilnius.
The yard is seven tracks wide and contains
approximately 20 buildings of which six are very
large warehouse types and the others are proba-
bly shops and storage. The area is also
connected by an improved road network to the
other launch areas in the complex. Launch Areas
No 1 and 2, both complete Type III areas, are
located 5.7 ism to the north and 10.5 nm to the
north-northeast, respectively. The Smorgon
Fixed Field Site is located 8.8 nm to the north-
northeast.
This launch area was first observed in
at which time,
because of the poor quality of the photography,
only the outline of the launch site, the site
access road, three buildings in the administra-
tion and housing section, and some of the road
network were discernible. The status of con-
struction could not be determined. Smorgon.
Launch Area No I was in the midstage of con-
struction and Launch Area No 2 was also first
observed in the early stage of construction. The
Smorgon Fixed Field Site was present. - In
Launch Area
No 3 was again observed and excavations for the
control bunker and two Iaunc'i silos were dis-
cernible. New scarring was visible in the admin-
istration and housing section but no increase
in facilities was observed. Launch Area No
3 was identified as a'Type IV IRBM launch area
in the early stage of construction. Construction
also was proceeding at the two soft launch areas.

silos and a control bunker, plus three associated
buildings. . The site support facility now con-
tained approximately 12 buildings.
No 2 still was under construction.
In
Launch Area
when the area
25X1 D
was, again observed, the launch site was nearly
complete. The control bunker had been covered,
the loop road was present, but some activity
was continuing around the three launch silos.
The site support facility was expanding and now
contained approximately 18 buildings. A
new receiving, inspection, and maintenance
(RIM) facility including a
building and one unidentified building were under
construction to the west of the site support
facility. Launch Area No 2 was in the late stage
of construction. In late
when again covered; the launch site
was complete and contained three launch silos
with covers, a control bunker, and a loop road.
The RIM facility was under construction, as
were some buildings in the site support facility.

The access road enters the launch area (Fig-

site support facility. It continues another 3,000
feet where it starts to rise 'and forms _a-heart-
shaped loop serving three launch silos and a
small unidentified structure. In the center of
the loop is. the previously mounded control
bunker. Also present at the launch site are three
Marge and one small buildings. The site support-
facility consists of two sections: the admini-

is the RIM facility. The RIM facility consists
of three buildings, including a missile-ready
building, a small building, and a building of
unknown function with a small structure on either
side of its entrance.

the RIM _facility are drive-in.; No security
fencing was evident around the launch area or
any of its components.
