MEMORANDUM FOR: Director, Imagery Analysis Service
SUBJECT: Proposed Computer Program to Maintain Egyptian SAM Order
of Battle
I. The Imagery Analysis Service wishes to recommend that a computer-
based method be established to maintain SAM order of battle information for
Egyptian SAM defenses.
2. The recent discovery of some 120 new SAM sites, in Egypt on one
KH mission illustrated that manual data retrieval methods are not adequate.
The necessity for monitoring very large numbers of SAM sites during a cease-
fire period will probably increase the requirement for automated retrieval
of this information.
3. We think there is a requirement for a retrieval system for Egyptian
SAM OB which has more flexibility and ease of retrieval than can now be pro-
vided by NPIC. We are aware of the HIGH TRACK program in existence at CIA
Headquarters, but it too is of limited usefulness for these ur oses. where
believe that such a retrieval system should be based in
it is available to support imagery analysis efforts and where it can most
easily be maintained. We think IAS could contribute substantially to such
a program, on the basis of the questions which are asked by other analysts,
and our familiarity with the area, the intelligence requirements, and the
retrieval problems involved.
4. The need for such a retrieval system exists today and we believe
this need will soon become more critical.
