Daniel Letourneau.r-' Esa.
Dear M. Letourneau:
I have received your letter of 4 August, in which you write
me of the research you are doing toward reconstructing the true
history of Admiral Wilhelm Canaria.
I never had the opportunity to meet Admiral Canaria personally,
though I had studied his history and background, and was indirectly in
touch with him from time to time. I put in my book, Germany's Under-
ground, to which you refer, something of what I knew about him during
the latter war days, and about all I feel I can add is this: --
He seemed to me to be a man torn between his conscience
and what he conceived to be his duty toward his country and his
commander-in-chief. From all I know of the facts, it seemed to me
his conscience won, and he risked and lost his life following the dictates
of science.
I shall look forward with great Interest to learning of the out-
come of your own research, and I trust that you will be successful in
finding the documents in the Archives which will help you in your work.
Faithfully yours,
Allen W. Dulles
