A roadbed in the very early stages of construction, extends from the existing rail line between the Thai-nguyen Iron and Steel Combine and the Thai-nguyen Iron Ore Processing Plant at 21 31N - 105 56E southeastward for 22 nm to a point one nm N. W. of the Hanoi/Dong-Dang Rail Line at 21 25N - 106 17E. This railroad when completed will provide a more direct route between China and the Thai Nguyen Iron-Steel Combine thereby tying the economies of the two countries more closely together. The roadbed is being constructed on level terrain in the transition zone between the cultivated riceland area to the south and the wooded hills area to the north. The railroad will have gentle curves and light gradients when completed. Two new rail yards are under construction just north of the existing Kep Rail Yard on the Hanoi/Dong-Dang Rail Line at 21 24N - 106 17E (Figure A. Yard I (Figure 3) will probably be used az a freight holding yard. It consists of a through main line and a. completed turning wye with curvature radadi of 800 feet and 48o feet. Two other tracks are under construction in the yard and there is space for 5 additional tracks. A probable watering and fueling facility is under construction in the yard. B. Yard 2 (Figure 3) will probably be used for classification. It consists of two completed tracks and 6 tracks under construction. There is space for approximately 5 additional tracks. As of construction was not sufficiently advanced to determine the capacity of either of these yards. A 30 nm segment of the Hanoi/Dong-Dang Rail Line from Kep northward to 21 45N - 106 44E was studied. This railroad realignment does not appear to relate to the standard gauge roadbed construction activity which was discontinued by the North Vietnamese late in 1961 or early 1962 (Figure 7). Although the radai of the turning wye in railroad yard No. 1 is comparable in size to the standard gauge turning wye at Ping-hsiang, there is no further evidence to indicate that the North Vietnamese are starting to convert the Hanoi/Dong-Dang Rail Line from meter to standard gauge.
