1. SIGNIFICANCE:
THIS BRIEFING BOARD DEPICTS CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITY ON ROUTE 92,
WHICH IS A MAJOR LINK IN THE CRITICAL CENTRAL SECTION OF THE COMMUNIST
ROAD NETWORK IN THE LAOTIAN PANHANDLE.
2. LOCATION:
THE GRAPHIC DEPICTS THAT PORTION OF ROUTE 92, WHICH EXTENDS
FROM ROUTE 9 AT 1638N 10625E NORTH TO 1640N 10625E, APPROXIMATELY
0.4 NM SOUTH OF BAN DONG.
3. COLLATERAL:
COLLATERAL REPORTS THAT ROUTE 92 IS A SIXTY-FOUR NM ROAD LINK
WHICH, PARALLELING THE LAOS/SOUTH VIETNAM BORDER, EXTENDS SOUTH AND
SOUTHEASTWARD FROM ITS JUNCTION WITH ROUTE 9 AT BAN DONG AND TERMINATES
AT THE SE KONG (RIVER) IN THE VICINITY OF BAN BAC, 21 NM EAST-NORTHEAST
OF SARAVANE. NORTH OF ROUTE 9 ONLY A SYSTEM OF TRAILS LEADS TO THE
VIETNAM DEMILITRAIZED ZONE.
ROUTE 92 HAS LIMITED ALL-WEATHER CAPABILITY BECAUSE ONLY A FEW
BRIDGES HAVE BEEN CONSTRUCTED (MOST STREAMS BEING CROSSED BY MEANS OF
FORDS), OLD TRAILS HAVE BEEN UTILIZED WHERE POSSIBLE, AND ONLY SHORT
SECTIONS OF THE ROAD HAVE BEEN SURFACED.1 THE ROUTE REMAINED GENERALLY
UNSERVICEABLE AND/OR IN A STATE OF DISUSE THROUGH OCTOBER 1966.2

CONSTRUCTION FROM ROUTE 9 AT UTM XD519397 NORTH TO THE END OF
PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE AT UTM XD528431. THE ROAD IS IN ADVANCED
STAGES OF CONSTRUCTION AND VEHICLE TRACKS ARE EVIDENT AS FAR NORTH
AS 1638N 1o625E (UTM XD523411). THE ROAD IS IN INTERMEDIATE STAGES
OF CONSTRUCTION FROM THE END OF THE VEHICLE TRACKS NORTH TO A NEWLY
CONSTRUCTED FORD AT 1639N 10625E (UTM XD522422). INITIAL CLEARING
FOR THE ROAD IS DISCERNIBLE FROM THIS POINT NORTH TO THE END OF
PHOTOGRAPHIC COVERAGE. ALSO OBSERVED ARE TWO APPARENTLY ACTIVE
VILLAGES AT 1639N 10625E (UTM's XD523419 AND XD523421).
