AUTHOR: Olenev. S. N.
TITLE: On the Emb=yonic Histogenesis of the Pigment Epithelium of the
Retina
PERIODICAL: Doklady Akademii nauk SSSR, 1959, Vol 127, Nr 69 pp 1312-1314
(USSR)
ABSTRACT: There are several theories on the origin of the pigment mention-
ed in the title: a) the nucleus theory (Refs 9-12); b) the
mitochondrial theory (Refs 3,13,14) according to which the pig-
ment is foxmed by melanization of the mitochondria; c) the
lipochondrial theory (Ref 5) - the pigment is an inclusion of'
lipoid origin; d) the pigment is formed by the Golgi apparatus
(Refs 4,15); e) the pigment is formed by a particular pigment-
forming center (Ref 8). The opinions on the change in shape of
the pigment are contradictory: some Jnventigatore opine that
round-grained and needle-ohuped pigment are not of the same
type and cannot be transformed into each other (Refs 4,15).
According to other investigators (Ref 12), a pigment grain has
an Inner structure. It is concluded that the pigment is a
Card 1/3 derivative of the nucleus. The differentiation of the epithelium

On the Embryonic Histogenesis of the Pigment Epitheliu= of the Re-~ina
mentioned in the title was insufficiently taken into account.
The investigation carried out by the author on a chicker,
embryo had the purpose of 1) pursuing the morphological changes
of this epithelium during the evolution; 2) determining the
dynamics of the nucleoproteid content. Paraffin-section
were used, which were investigated in the stages of 172, 76, 88,
95, 100, 104, 120, 162 and 191 h of incubation, and on th~~
11vh, 15th, 17th, 19th and 21st day of incubation, then oii
1-day old chicken, as well as on the grown-up hen. The pigment
epithelium layer at the stage of 72 h is 1/3 as thick as the
retina. It grows thinner and thinner 1with the time so that it
amounts to 1/6 of the retina in the hen. Also its character
changes. At the 72 h stage it seems to be arranged in two
series, or - in some places - in one series; high-prismatic at
the 88 h stage; low-prismatic at the 162 h stage. The pigment
appears in the form of small rounded-off or slightly oblong
grains after 104 hours of incubation. At the 120 h stage, the
form of the pigment granulae approaches the shape of needles
although there are still some rounded-off grains. As from the
162 h stage, the quantity of pigment increasesl it is completely
Card 2/3 needle-shaped, and later on the cytoplasm is fully covered by
SOV/20-127-6-47/5',
On the Embryonic HistogenesiB of the Pigment Epithelium of the Retina
the pigment. The content of ribonucleoproteids decre ses at the
same time. With the diminution of the nucleus and of the cyto-
plasm, also the pyronophilic nucleoles becomes smaller. The
opinion cannot be accepted that there are two separate types of
pigment: a needle-shaped and a round-grained one (Refs 4,15
The results obtained by the author (as well as of Refs 6,16~-
are in opposition to the.atatement saying that the pigment con-
taining epithelial cells in vitro are turned to histiocytes
(Ref 7). The resorption and digestion of melanine, as well as
the change of the shape of the cells observed by 0. Goglia
(Ref 7), may be considered degenerative phenomena. There are
1 figure and 16 references, 4 of which are Soviet.

ABSTRACT: A method'of freezing UV'-irradiated experimental materials at
770X makes it
possible to stop the photochemical process at the stages
of, tho primary products and makes study of them easier. UV-irradiation
at~770K 'yields two photopToducts, one responsible. for thei;iio'lu--mines-c-e**-n-'c-e-'-
l
of proteins and the other responsible for tbe fading of protein luml-
nescence. The authors detected beat and visible-light-induced phospho-
rescence in ultraviolet-irradiated-proteins and the aromatic amino acidsi
tryptophan and tyrosine, and measured the time of fading and the spec-
tral composition of the Ili-nduced" and also the ordinary phosphorescence

of these compounds.at 770K.. Various characteristics were-subsequently
studied.. Light-induced phosphorescence was measured according to the 11
sequence: ultraviolet--dimness--visible light--measurement; ordinary
phosphorescence, through the sequence ultraviolet--measurement. The
authors measured, and tabulated the reciprocal of the "life period" of
ordinary and "induced" phosphorescence, 'T, for -tyrooine)- tryptophan and
chimotrypsin. The values of i for induced phosphorescence were, as a
rule, close to-the -r of ordinary ~hospborescence but always a little
larger in magnitude. ~In addition, spectral anal;sis of ordinary and
of tryptopban and tyrosixie showed that the bam18
of induced phosphorescence is shifted slightly to the longwave side as
compared to brdinary, phospboreseence. Because of the similarities of the
afterglows,_it~.was predicted-that scintillation proceeds from the third
evel of the original aromatic amino acid molecule. It was found that
ight-,induced phosphorescence differs essentially from ordinary . phos-
i
hore.scence; in particular's. "induced"'phosphorescence may be antitox.1C.
eat-iuduced phosphorescence was studied in the sequence: ultraviolet--
arkness--heat--cooling--taeasureme .nt. The curves of luminescent fading

er reaction. T of h6at-induced phosphorescence was also found to ma-tchi

tyrosine, fading time of "induced" phosphorescence greatly'exc-ended that
of ordinary phosphorescence. The Influence of the intensity of light
,on the forward reaction of theaccumulation of a photoproduct -under -Cbe
influence of ultraviolet radiation and on.the reverse reaction of the
destruction of th""!,product was also studied. It was.abown-that the
peed of the forward reaction is directly proportional to-the intensity
of ultraviolet.irradiation. The speed of the reverse reaction is pro-
portional to the square root of t'h,% intensity of,the acting light. Thusl
the forward photochemical reaction, lproceeds acco:oding to a single quan-
.tum mechanism, but the following-heIating or Illumination b visible

light proceeds to the recombinatio-n,of photoproducts and scintillation
from the triplet-stat a of the original amino acid. Orig. art. has: 3

ABSTRACT: The article deals with tests on tLe condition of various kinds of butier
preserved In cold storage over different periods of time and at different
temperatures. The object of the tests was to determine the optinr.'m
storage conditions for butter. A compara-~ive table shows the resLlts
of tests on 4 grades of butter, viz. "continuous-p_,ocess" simijer b-atter;
unsalted summer butter manithozured by -Lie ordinary ~'batch-proctess";
special high grade summer butter; "oonrtriuous proce!.~z;" winter butter.
Each grade of butter (except for winter 1xitter, which was kept in cold
storage for 9 months only) was kept in storage for 3, 6, 9, 12 months
in succession at -50, -100, -140, -180C. At intervals of 3 months
samples of each kind of butter were taken out for chemical analyses and
for examination by a sampling panel, who tested the taste and smell of
the butter. The difference detected in the taste and smell. were expreszed

On the Extent to Which Mass-Produced Butter way be Preserved by Cold Storage
the condition of preservation of the "continuous-processt' butter
practically did not change in the process -f storfig at -10o, -140
and -18OC; this kind of butter should be stored t a temperature of
-120 to -140C. This appears to be the optimum storage condition for
a duration of 12 months. Butter manufactured by the ordinary process
is better preserved at lower temperatures, viz, -180C.

Title : The Physiological Basis of Increased Productivity
of Farm Animals
Orig Pub: Uch. zap. Urallskogo un-ta, 1957, vYp. 15, 3-30
Abstract: Experiments made on calves which were raised on
rations with a low, average, and high content
of proteins, revealed a better digestion of pro-
teins, nitrogen-free extracts and carotin, in
animals which had received more proteins in their
rations. It was also revealed that the stimula-
tion of secretion of gaatro intestinal Juices

Abstract: and a higher metabolism rate are not only due to
unconditioned reflexes produced by a specific
effect of food, but occur as a result of condi-
tioned reflexes induced by the conditions under
which the food had been consumed. In an experi-
mental study of horses the effect of training on
the utilization of energy derived from food, on
blood composition, acid content of urine, reaction
of erythrocyte sedimentation, coagulation of
blood, pulse rate, metabolism etc. was revealed.
The tremendous importance of training was deter-
mined as a factor which affected metabolism, and
produced the complex reflexes which affected the
essential functions of an organism. Pronounced
functional changes were observed as well in
large horned cattle when kept on pasturage

Abstract: grounds. Under these conditions the passage of
food through their gastro intestinal tract was
accelerat-ed to almost double the usual time. A
paradox was observed: a marked low rate of meta-
bolism and a decrease of blood circulation when
physical strain was imposed on cows (such as the
placing of a sand bag weighing 10-20 percent of
the body weight on the 5houlders of a cow stand-
ing In a stall). Productive, choice cows showed
a higher oxygen content in their blood.
