I., and TITLEt Study of the Adsorption of Ions on Platinized Carbon by Exchange of the Gaseous Atmosphere PERIODICALt Zhurnal fizicheskoy khicii, 1960, Vol. 34, NO. 10, pp. 1900 - 1906 TEXT: A study has been made of adsorption and desorption of Cs* and Br- ions by means of ash-free platinized active carbon from one and the same sample solution by way of an exchange of the gaseous atmosphere above the solution. The adsorption took place mainly from buffer solutions. The production of active carbon and its platinization have already been de- sadbed in earlier papers (Refs. 7, 14# 15). The carbon ured had a 1,vrnup of about 50 % and a maximum ash content of 0-05 %. by weight. The weight of the platinum layer on the arbon surface amounted to 0.25 7' of the weight of the carbon. Carbon fractions with a particle diameter of 1-2 mm were taken. Ga=a-active C9154 and Br8l tracer isotopes were used. The experi- Card 114 Study of the Adsorption of Ions on Platinized S/076/(O/O3,4/0-_9/023/041XX carbon by Exchange of the Gaseous Atmosphere B020/BO56 ments were carried out in the vessel shown in Fie. 1. Ele:-trolytic bydror,~,n and atmospheric air freed from C02 were used for tho pur-,osa. If sevoral reaction vessels are used in conjunction, aample solutions may be taken from one vessel without interrupting the gas flow by the others. The four- vessel system used cads it possible to invostiCate adoorption-desorption changes in the same sample by blowing hydrogen and air alternatively throuEh the system. Table I shows the dependence of the cesium quantity adsorbed from a CSITO solution on its concentration, the quantity of cesium adsorbed from the hy1rogen atmosphere rising with a rising cesium concen- tration in the solution. The cesium adsorption is accompanied by an acidification of the solution, which increases with an increacing adsorp- tion of cesium. In the desorption of cesium into the same solutior, air instead of hydrogen was usedl this desorption van a quantitative one, which indicates the electrostatic character of the cesium adsorption. An alkaliza- tion of the solution was found to take place. Table 2 a) 'ows the dependence of the adsorption of cesium ions on the pH of the solution for initial cesium concentrations cCe - 0.01 Y and 0.05 Y. Tables 3 and 4 show the J%ts. on the adsorption of cesium from buffer solut;ons in the presence of a strange ion ksodium). In the case of a constant Na concentration, the Card 214 Study of the Adsorption of Ions on Platinized S/076jfO/O54/-,09/023/041XT Carbon by Exchange of the Gaseous Atrosphere B020/3056 adsorption of Ca increases with its concentration; if, however# the Cs concentration and the pH of the solution remain constant, and the Na concentration is varied, the adsorption of the Ce ions decreases with sodium concentration. The dependence of the adsorption of the Cn lonn on p1la ( - - log cIts ) is 'Linear undor these conditions (Fig. 3). If the Cs- and Na-ion concentrations are kept on a constant lcvel and the pH of the solution is varied (Fig. 4)o the adsorption of Cs increasrs linearly with the pH. The results obtained by the experiments with respect to the adsorption of the Br- Ions on platinized carbon are Given in Table 4, fron, which it follows that the adsorption of Br- increases at a low pH. All results obtained indicate the electrostatic character of bromine-ion adsorption on the platinized carbon. N. A. Shilov, A. R. Frumkin, D. 17. Strazhesko, B. Ye. Tartakovskayaq S. Petrov, R. TITLE: Certain aspects of the pathogenesis of cutaneous radiation injuries PERIODICAL: %teditsinskaya radiologiya, v. 7, no. 1, 1962, 16-21 TEXT: The development and the hcaling process of cutaneous ra,liation ulcers were studied in 57 patienti, whose lesions originated in radiation therapy. In four of the patients the ulcers appeared following a tocil dose of 12,000-20,000 r administered as treatment for malignant melanoma. The duration of radiaticn ulcers varied from several months to ten years. In addition, experimental radiation injuries of the skin were produced on 150 albino rats and 20 guinea pigs. which were itradiateil with 3.000 r. The main changcs observable at the site of radiation injury are marked disorders of vascular permeability. As a rule, secondary infections accompany radiation ulcers. Epithetial regeneration never began before thorough c1caming of the ulcus, and the reduction of the infection to a minimum. The epithelial !cgencration occurrcd parallel with the development of granulation tissue, both processes being interdependent. The ulcer for- mation brings about irreversible changes similar to senile alterations of the skin. There arc 4 figures, Card 1/2 !RK-WvUt IN" Certain aspects of the pathogenesis...
