ABSTRACT: Theoretical and experimental investigations were made of the variation
A~o affecting the phase-matching angle ~0 for second harmonic generation
-(SHG) in an ADP crystal whose optical characteristics are modified Dy an
applied electric field. It was found that only the component E, of the
field along the optical axis has an appreciible effect on the angle ~0.
This effect is at its maximum when.the plane of the laser beam in the
crystal and the optical axis is at 45* to the transverse crystal axes.
Then, 400 - 54.04 (10-6) ZZ, where Ez is in Kv/cm and Ao,) is in radiaas.
From this It follaws*that a field of 100 Kv/r-m causes an 18' variatioa

only. The intensity of these lines can be explained by a large divergence of the
focused beam, which insures that the conditions of synchronism are fulfilled for all
frequencies. The experiments show that by employing Raman scattering in various
substances with subsequent nonlinear transformation in an ADP-type crystal, a cohere
output beam can be obtained at any frequency within the optical range. Orig. art.

TITLE: A method of laser frequency conversion

using the Raman lines of the beam in benzene and its subsequent mixing in an ADP
crystal. The arrangement consists of a Q-switched ruby laser (the output beam of
which is passed 'through a vessel'with benzene), the mixing crystal, a filter of
'Luticn of CuSO (for suppression of the main frequency of the laser at

Raman lines ~X = 6494, 7459, and 8059 A) is sufficient to effect a nonlinear interac-
tim of 41 frequencies within the 2-mm. thick mixing crystal. The emissions at 3471
and 3729 A can be considered second harmonics or the results of the mixing of
corresponding frequencies, while those at 3596 and 3874 R are the results of mixing

densities. The effect of electrostriction appears small. The results of the
experiment show that in order to determine the power of laser emission it is suffi-
cient to measure the initial amplitude of the crystal oscillations, which is inde-
gendent of the degree of focusing the laser beam on the surface of a piezoarystal
covered with a (0.03 mm) lead foil with a high-reflectivity factor. In conclusion,
the authors express their gratitude to V. N. Ishchenkop N. D. Lizunov and H. L.

On the Polarization Phenomena in glectroluninesceat Phosphors

osaillo-graph (Fig 2). Modified sources (GIP-1. GIS-2, 261) were
used to supply pulses with rise and decay times of the order of 1 jisec
and amplitudes which could be varied from 0 to 360 V; the duration
and the repetition frequency of the pulses cculd also be varied
within wide limits. Electroluminescent flashes (Fig 2) were
observed in the region of the green luminescence band (-500 mIL)
by means of a photaaaltiplier FRU-19 and & cathode-ray ascillograph.

ABSTRACTs Polarization in electroluminancent phosphors goveras -the Magnitude
of the- field in individual phosphor grains &ad can be dividel into
long-duration ("frozGn'4) polarization, which in retained for up to

and decays in a muGh,shorter time. This rapid polarization reduce@

flash on removal of the external field. The present paper describes
a study of the ;%pM polarization processes and electroluminea cant
flashes in the Za-OuAl phosphor excited with pulses. The
polarization processes were investigtted by observing the form of
the current (passing through the circuit which lachides the electro-
luminosceat capacitor.'ef. Fig 1) on application and removal of an
external electric field. One of the capacitor electrodes was
tranmparent and the interelectrade separation was 200 It. The

After closing the eyes it certain stimulation of the brain was noted; there wits in
11wreasu in atoplitude of all waves (an unipolar lead from optic zone was used).

vv-n more increased. Alpha-waves usually became more regular anti beta-waves
often increased in amplitude. In the second phase of hypnosis there was a certain
decrease in electrical brain activity. Alpha-waves either became more rhythmical
and regular or they decreased in amplitude. Beta-waves alsodecreased in amplitude
(11' partly disappeared. !n the third ( somnambulic) hypnosis phase all wave aMpli-
tuties decreased. Only beta-waves of low amplitude were observed. Brainpotentials
were similar to those registered in a quiet alert state but the electrical activity
was often flecrease(I. EEG did not show characteristics of a natural deep sleep.
