Abstract : Pilot plant tests have been made at the Grifit8e Plant with
the Polish Karbopol-3 activated charcoal (of the norite type);
this charcoal is of low activity. The charcoal is added to
the juice in the form of a suspension. When 1.5% of charcoal
calculated on the weight of the sugar are added before the
second saturation, the clarification is 17%; a clarification
of 12% is obtained when 1.0% of charcoal is added. The ad-
dition of 1% charcoal to the juice in the fourth evaporator

Abstract : unit gave a total clarification of 6.5%; when a similar
amount of cha coal is passed through the concentrated solu-
tion, a clarification of 25% is obtained. A syrup of densi-
ty about 650 Brix coDLtaining charcoal is easily filtered
11 a filter press (with an average throughput of 2-3 liters/

m min). The addition of the charcoal to the juice before
evaporation reduces the formation of scum and results in
the formation of a porous sediment which can easily be re-
moved by mechanical means. The addition of charcoal to the
juice ahead of the second saturation step also affects the
formation of deposits on the walls of the saturation unit.

Abstract: In the early stages of d6g pest the most effective
therapeutic methods are hyp6dermic, intravenous and
intraperitoneal injections with specific antiserum.
If it is administered during the first few days it
can check the disease. The effect of the serum is
suppozted by sulfamides, penicillin or streptcqrcin,
which, although they have no effect on the virus itself,

drained off. Sometimes, the puncture Itself and
the draining of six to ten ml of spinal fluid brought

porary and even permanent relief in some cases.
An experimental intraspinal injection of three to
five =1 antipest serum was given to 10 dogs. This
caused a very violent reactim in all of the dogs,
with intensification of the nervous syndrome.
Experimental spinal injections of penicillin and
sulfamides resulted in the death of the animals.
Good therapeutic results were attained when two dogs
with the nervous syndrome of the disease were treated
by the Ulrich methmd which uses simultaneous hypo-

TITLE: Concurrent blood and CSF tests during nervous distemper in dogs

ABSTRACT: Investigations were carried out on 15 healthy and 47 sick dogs with
various symptoms of the nervous form of canine distemper, of which 3 were infected
experimentally. The fluid was taken by suboccipital puncture. In several dogs the
fluid was found to be yellowish and opalescent, in the majority increase in pressure
was found. The cell reaction was increased (ple0CYt03iS), with a preponderance of
lymphoidal cells. The level of general protein was higher. The reaction of Pandy,
Weichbrodt, Nonne-Apelt and Takata-Ara were positive. The sugar content was lower.
In the majority of cases the level of chlorides was higher. The most obvious
changes were found in the fluid in acute cases of the disease. In the peripheral
blood, the number of red corpuscles and amount of haemoglobin were smaller; in
the blood picture, neutralstaining granulocytosis and lymphopenia were observed.
The investigations may be helpful in the diagnosis of the nervous form of the diseat3e
and in prognosis for canine distemper. The withdrawal of some cerebrospinal fluid
in the acute form of the disease lessens the strength of the symptoms or temporarily
