Belgrade, Narodno Zdravlje, Vol 19, No 7-8, 1963, pp 242-245. Abstract: Given proper handling from beginning to end,' the Yugoslav fresh and dry BCG vaccines proved to yield entirely satisfactory results. The dry vaccine is prepared from the cultures as the fresh and is used 3.5 to 4.5 months after preparation. The slightly bet- ter results obtained with the French dry BCG vaccine might be ascribed to its stronger concentration. The authors suggest the selection of cultures in which BCG bacilli display great enzymatic potential, as well as the regitration of tho Yugoslav dry BCG L-a-racoine as a standard. "Changes in the Eyes in Cases of Hemoblastosio." Zagreb, Lijecniolci Vjesnik, Vol 85, No 8, 1963, PP 853-860. Abstract: ZA-uthors, English summary modified7 The authors discuss the results of clinical examinations of the external and internal parts of the eye in 100 patients suffering from hemoblastosis including 30 cases of Morbus Hodgkin, 17 of acute leucosia, 20 of chronic lymphatic leu- cosis, 17 of chronic granulocitic leucosis, 12 of reticulum-cell sar- coma, and three of multiple myeloma. Subconjunctival or orbital infil- trates were found in 30 cases, a corneal pannus in five, and retinal hemorrhages or exudates in 13. Congestion of the retinal vessels was the single symptom in 32 cases. Various other retinal changes were noted in 17 oases and soloronin of the ohorioid ir. 24. The authors conclude that ophthalmological examination in not enough for a safe diagnosis of hemoblastosis but that some retinal changes may be cugges- tive of the duration and phase of the disease. With an oxygen content of 0. 00316 all steels except for lCrl8Ni5Mn7 were found to have approximately the same very high corrosion resistance: corrosion rates (1280-hr test) varied from 2. 9 to 4. 0 mg/dM2.month. In no case did the corrosion rate exceed 40year, No steel showed signs of intergranular corrosion. The tensile strength and elongation of all steels decreased slightly. PERIODICAL: "Izvestiva Akademii Nauk.Otdelenive Telchnicheskikh Nauk" (Bulletin of the Ac.Sc., Technical Sciences SectionT,- 1957, No.8, pp. 123-125 (U.S.S.R.) ABSTRACT; As a result of detailed investigation of the causes and the mechanism of the evaluation of graphite at the surface of specimens during heat treatment in vacuum, Salli, I.V. and his team (4 and 5) arrived at the conclusion that the crystallising graphite is the product of decomposition of the over-saturated austenite durine, a drop in the temperature below the Ast point and the important role of this is emphasized in the process of graphitisation in Fe-C alloys. If this conclusion is correct, a similar picture can be anticipated for the crystallisation of graphite also in alloys not containing metastable phases. For_verifying this assumption Ni-C (with 0.31% C) and Co C (with 0.3 were investigated which do not contain the metastable phases Ni C and Co 3C in the solid state. After grinding and Card 1/3 polishing the specimens were placed in a vacuum furnace 24-8-17/34 Crystallisation of graphite in Ni-C and Co-C alloys. (Cont.) maintaining the vacuum between 1072 and 10-3 mm Hg Col. The Ni-C alloy was heated to 11.00 C for thirty minutes and then cooled at a speed of 30 C/min; the Co-C specimen was subjected to a similar heat treatment except that the temperature was raised to 1150 C. As a result of this heat treatment the polished surface became covered with a film which in colour and structure is similar to the graphite coatings in above eutectoidal steels. The results are described. Under otherwise equal conditions the evoluti6n of graphite on the surfaces of Ni-C and Co-C alloys is considerably more intensive than it is in above eutectoidal steels. There is also a difference in the formation of graphite coatings during tempering: such coatings are absent in above eutectoidal steels but they are present in Ni-C and Co-O alloys. Investigation of the process of the evolution of graphite in systems not containing metastable phases confirms that this process proceeds independently and the results will help to solve the important problem of germination of graphite centres Card 2/3 during graphitisation of Fe-0 alloys. TITLE: Investigation of Graphite Separation on the Surfaces of Fe-C, Ni-C and Co-C Alloys PERIODICAL: Nauchn. zap. Dnepropetr. un-t, 1957, Vol. 72, pp. 65 - 70 TEM. The author studied the character of graphite separation on the polished surface of specimens made of Fe-C (1.5%), Ni-C (o.45% c) and CO-C (0.55% C) alloys, subjected to heat treatment in a vacuum. Heat treatment of the speci- mens consisted of the following stages: 1) quenching from 1,1000 in mercury, 2) annealing at 68oOc for 4.8 or 12 hours, and without annealing, 3) heating to 8500C and cooling at a rate of about 30 degrees/minute. Graphite separation was observed only after carrying out the last operation; in a specimen that was not subjected to annealing at 6800c, graphite separation did not take place. It is noted that the amount of separated graphite is in a direct relation with the'ex- tent of annealii : specimens, annealed for 12 hours were almost completely cover- ed by separated graphite showing a well defined crystalline structure; after Card 1/2 S/137/6O/OOO/Oi2/029/04i A006/AOOI Investigation of Graphite Separation on the Surfaces of Fe-C, NI-C and Co-C Alloys shorter annealing durations the film was not continuous. Such an effect of an- nealing time is obviously connected with the fact that longer annealing entails a higher degree of coagulation of cementite particles which predetermines the formation of graphite nuclei. In'the case of small and numerous cementite part- icles, super saturation of austenite arising during cooling from 8500C, is liqui- dated at the expense of particle growth. If, however, the particles are large and sparcely arranged, the conditions for the liquidation of super-saturation are less favorable because of the longer diffusion path; under these conditions graphite nucleation is possible. Co-C alloys were heated to 1,2000C for 30 minu- tes and cooled at a rate of about 30 degrees/giinute. As a result the surface of sections was completely covered with graphite separations. It was roentgeno- graphically established that the basic plane of graphite crystals, separated out of Fe-C, Ni-C, Co-C alloys is mainly oriented parallel to the section plane. C from annealing, separating on the surface of white iron and graphitizing steels, during isothermal holding in a vacuum, does not show any definite orientation as it was established by preliminary investigations. Many investigators have tried to establish the occurrence of this process in steel (eg Ref 1, 6 and 7). The present,,authors show photomicrographs of the surface of type U-101steel after vacuum quenching in mercury from 10567-C(Fig la). Fig 1b shows the relief obtained on heating the same specimen (polishecO at 200 0C per minute in a vacuum furnace: the martensite relief has reappeared by a diffusional transformation. The authors go on to give a direct proof that transformation of martensite into austenite is not diffusionless either at much higher heating ratest Card 1/2 Fig 2a shows a vacuum-quenched U-10 steel surface; 697CO S/126/60/009/03/025/033 EM/E452 On the Diffusionless Transformation of Martensite into Austenite Fig 2b the same surface after vacuum heating at about 800*C/sec, the cooling rate being far from the critical rate for hardening; Fig 2B the same surface after holding at 10000C for 1 hour and cooling at the same rate as before. Only in the last treatment is the martensite relief almost eliminated. The authors conclude that not only did diffusionless martensite to austenite transformation not occur in the Sokolov- Sadovskiy work but that it cannot occur at any heating rates because of the especially high mobility of carbon in steels. The specimens of the alloys after grinding and polishing were heated in vacuo to the temperature of the single phase equilibrium, retained at this temperature for 20 minutes and quenched in mercury. The annealing was carried out in vacuo (about 10-2 to 10-3 nun Hg) at the temperatures 350, 400, 500 and 6500C for 10 minutes with subsequent cooling to room temperature at a rate of 100C/min. In addition, processes talking Card 1/4 30898 S/18o/61/000/005/008/018 The mechanism of the surface E071/E435 place in the graphite film at various durations of isothermal annealing (4, 8 and 12 hours) at 400% were studied. As a result Of such heat treatment the polished surface of the specimens was covered with a graphite film well visible under the microscope. After an appropriate heat treatment the film was separated in a "Popov" electrolyte and submitted to an electron diffraction investigation, using an electron microscope :-W,-3 (ENI-3) with a diffraction hood 3e-3 (EV-3)~ It was found that during the first stages of annealing of Ni-C and Co-C alloys the carbon substance is arranged in a graphitic two dimensional lattice and packets of lattices, This turbostratic structure of the separated carbon leads to a symmetry of the diffraction rings (002) and asymmetry of the rings (100) and (110) and has a larger parameter c than the crystal lattice of graphite, With increasing temperature or duration of annealing, an ordering of the carbon substance takes place, The graphite lattices in packets obtain azimuthal orientation in respect of the rotational axii perpendicular to them, The asymmetry of the diffraction rings (110) and (100) decreases, in addition, the ring of three dimensional diffraction (112) appears. indicating Card 2/4 3098 s/i8o/61/000/005/008/018 The mechanism of the surface E071/E435 the appearance in the film of small graphite crystallites. The azimuthal orientation of these crystallites leads to the appearance of paired and single arc reflexes, Higher temperatures and long durations of annealing lead to the replacement of paired reflexes by single ones. This indicates an incomplete order in the structure of graphite crystallites. Apparently crystallites giving paired arcs have an intermediate structure. The graphitization process on the surface of Co-C alloys is less intensive than in Ni-C alloys, probably due to a rougher surface of the former. A similar mechanism of the formation of graphite on heat treatment in vacuo is probably applicable to the case of surface graphitization of iron-carbon alloys,, The author thanks A.F.Polese for his interest and comments. TITLE: Production of butadiene-styrene (methylstyrene) rubbers according to an iron-trilon-rongalite composition using a colophony emulsifier - ~Z PERIODICAL: Kauchu k i rezina,'\no. 1, 1963, 9 - 15 TEXT: Effective compositions of polymerization have been introduced by the authors for emulsion rubbers-iron-pyrophosphate and iron-trilon-rongalite, satis- fying industrial requirements. The suggested compositions are less sensitive to foreign admixtures contained in disproportionated colophony. The industrial pro- duction of the iron-trilon complex is easier than that of the iron-pyrophosphate complex. The described composition was used first at the Kuybyshev SH Plant in 1961 for the production of butadiene-methylstyrene rubber CKMC -30 APKM -15 (SKMS-30 ARKM-15). The suggested compostion has been perfected by further in- tensifying the polymerization process and Improving the rubber qualities. The experiments were conducted using: 92 - 91V,'9' butadiene-rectificate; 9W methylaty- rene; 99,41, styrene; colophony, disproportionated with acidic number 165, con- Card 1/3 3/138/63/000/001/0020008 Production of.butadiene-styrene (methSIstyrene) rubbers..A051/A126 talning abieteno acids (1. 8 - 2.5%) ; hyperis, containing 90. 8% hydrogen peroxide;' 90.8% monohydrogen peroxide diisopropylbenzene, containing 35% hydrogen peroxide; tertiarydodecyl.mereaptane, 95% concentrated. An autoclave of periodic action was,', used. The experimental results led to the following changes In the composition: 94 - 96% butadiene-rectificate; 98.% methylstyrene, produced by dehydratiort of isopropylbenzene; disproportionated colophony, produced on a palladium catalyst by the continuous method with acidic number 163 - 164, and containing abietene acids - (2.5 - 4.9%) ; commercial stearene acid; 95% tertiary dodecylmereaptane d200.8616, D201.4685; softened water with a total hardness of 0.029 mg.equiv./l and iron content - 0.'15 - 0.34%. The resulting SKMS-30 ARKM-15 commercial rubber is characterized by the absence of noticeable quantities of high-molecular frac- tions, It is similar to SKS-30 ARM-15 and S1948-30 ARM 15 in its plastic properties mix scorching and spraying resistance. Studies have been conducted on the possibi- lity of further reducing the emulsifier quantity In the production of butadiepe.;- -styrene and butadienemethylstyrene rubbers. It was found that: a) by reducing the emulsifier quantity from 5.8 to 5.2 weight parts, the polymerization duration does not change; b) by reducing the emulsifier quantity from 5.8 to 4.8 w.p., the duration remains the same If the trilon B is Increased from 0.04 to 0.05 W.P.
