'TITLE: The Annealing, of Glans Tubes (Otzhig ate%lyannykh trub) PhM1OrIC:-L: ritoklo i Keramika, 1958, Nr 3, pp. 5-8 (11.98R) ABSTRACT: Caid 1/3 It was experimentally proved that with drawing of tubes of 50 mm diameter fron ordinary i;laaf, (of the type of window- -glass) at a speed of 70 to 75 m per hour, the ronidual stresses amount to 20 to 50 mp/cm per I mn of the tikbe-wall thickness after cooling in the engine shaft. With drawinS of the sarie tubes from glass poor in alkali, at a speed of 90 to 95 r, per hour, the residual stresses attain 3o to 7 r-1 nA/cm Per 1 mm thickross of the tube-wall. The velocity of drawinG, of tubes of !,o mm diameter amounts to go to loo of running meters per hour. The output of the enEine could be'increased if it would be possible to achieve the first annealing of the tubes :in the nnGine-uhaft and to carry out the subBec 'ixent annealin,: in special plants. The Bubsequent annealing is at present carried out in a furnace the capacity of which is snaller than that of the enC;Inoos, so The Annealing of Glass Tubon 72-58-3-2/15 :that part of the current ~ube-produntion remains unannealled on stock in the rlasnworks at Gomell. Tonto were carried out with a gas annealing furn.-,-.e which was developed with the assistance of G. F. I'larty-_iyuk and I. A. Shilov and which operated according to a principle which is different fron the existing; one. In this furnace, the glas-tubes are simultaneously heated bota from inside and outside by means of blowing by combustion gases, by which the efficiency of the annealing-process increases, as well as the quality of the tubes, due to a more aniform heating. A formula with a coefficient K which depen1s on the diameter and on the ---lengths of the ttubes.--as well as on the velocity of ( -- -- -- combustion gases is given for the computation of te4erature, as may be seen from figure 1. This furnace is repres6nted in fiCure 1 and is designed for the operation of 2 mechanical equipments. Further, the construction and the operation of the furnace are fully described. The glass-tubea are vertically 'Located In a container and conveyed into the chamboro of the furnace by manna of trucl:n, The furnace has 4 chambers and the annealing scheme ia divided into 4 equal periods. This furnace has been in operation for a period of Card 2/3 11months during- which 72 kilometers of tubez were annealed. The Annealing of Glass Tubes 72- 58- 3 - 2/ 15 The measured values of the residual atraniies are given in table 2. The temperatur,ts of the conbustion gases at the input and output of the sets of tubes are given in fi&ure 2. There are 2 figures and 2 tables. For increa;~,ir.- the mechanical strength of tho semi-finished po:-celaine r-z)]-,ct 0'.35 of carboxy-methyl cellulose were added to the batch. 0,2% of fluid glasu and 0,1% of tioda were used in the preparation of the el(..ctrolyte. The glazed cups were dried'to a huzidity of 0,51/'o and then baked in the laboratory furnace (Fio 1). The maximum temperature in, the furnace waa l-;200. The cupLi were p1nced on t'-f-, of the furnac;! without a casing and were cooled accordi-nt; to a schedule specified by tho di',Lgram in fiJure 2. At thJs rate the Card 2/4 quality of the products obtained is by no means inferior Non-Recurrent Baking of Porcelain 307/72- c16 -9 -9,'Zo to that of the products from the Baranovka and Kiyev Works. The specimens corresponded to the requiremento imposed u-i,or. them in the checking of thermal and cheriic!Ll reriiativity, The glaze alto exhibited a customary qualitr. Invea- tigations of the microstructure of the body were carric-d out with a 'MP-3 microscoPe and X-ray- .9tructural analyses were made on the'UR~-70 instrument. In table 4 the structures of customary and of test products are portrayed,. As can be seen they do not differ at all. Figures 4 to 8 contain micrographs of polished porcelaine sections made after different baking periods. They do not indicate any essential variations in structure. The duration of baking ic therefore not determined by the physical and chemic&l transformaticna in the porcelaine but only by ~he heating facilities of the furnaces. The cooling process has hitherto not been the object of minute research. Preliminary experiments showed that a cooling of porcelaine cups froy, 13200 to 1000 -is possible within 8 - 10 minutes without impairing the quality of the product. The experiments Card 3/4 showed that a non-recurrent burning without casing Non-Recurrent Baking of Porcelain SOV/72-ciP,9-9/2e of porcelaine products in short automatic continuous car tunnel furnaces is possible.
