P., Zaremba, N. Ye., Dykman, D. G., Boys, G. V.- TITLE: Data of a Thermographic Study of Barium TitanatAth Certain Admixtures PERIODICAL: Izvestiya Akademii nauk SSSR. Seriya fizicheskuya? 1960, Vol. 24, 110. 10, pp. 1294 - 1295 TEXT: The authors examined the effect of commonly used admixtures upon the nintering process of barium titanate. These admixtures include Zr02, Bi20:5, TiO2, CaCOV MgC03 , BaC 03' etc. For this purpose, they made use of a complex thermal analyj~As which was conducted on an apparatus of the type 'YKTA-58 (I~S ~-58 :4 Barium titanate was synthesized at 1 26oOc. The samples were produced by the conventional ceramic procoss. The ther- mogram of barium titanate is shown in Fig.l. The first exothermic effect appears at 3000C and is related to tho burning out of the plasticizer; the second effect occura at 13000C and is due to the termination of the Card 1/3 v5021 Data of a Thermographic Study of Barium 5/046/60/024/010/030/033 Titanate With Certain Admixtures BO13/Bo63 production process of barium titanate. The endothermic effect observable at 8700C may be explained by the conversion of BaCC, 3contained in the material used. On the addition of TiO 2 and ZrO., two other thermal ef- fectz. are visible in the temperature range 1250 - 1290 0C: an endothermic effec;t on heating and an exothermic effect on cooling (Fig.2). This is prestizaably due to the formation of an eutectic BaTiO 3 melt with tita- natev of higher acidity and their subsequent crystallization. An X-ray analysis, performed by Ye. 1. Gindin, of thesystem BaTiO 3- ZrO2indicated the oxistence of a solid solution with a perovskite lattice. This fact is indicative of an excessive amount of titanate dioxide. The above- ment:',oned thermal effects are probably related to the presence of the latter. However, the data avai'lable do not indicate the compounds that form an eutectic melt. The authors established that a liquid phase exis-;s when sintering a material on the basis of barium titanate with the addition of T.iO 2 and ZrO, 2* In the presence of MgCO 3?- CaCO3, BaC 03' Card 2/3 85021 Data of a Thermographic Study of Barium S/()48/60/024/010/030/033 Titanate With Certain Admixtures B013/BO63 and other admixtures, the thermal are maintained.
