TITLEt Influence of hydrogen on the properties of large
forgings of CrNiMo steels
PERIODICALt HatnickA listy, 1961, No-5, PP-325--335
TEXT: In Part I of the paper the author deals, with the
influence of the process of annealing on the properties of the
forgings, particularly with the followingt various methods of
annealing immediately after forging and their influ~bnce on the
percentage of scrap; the most frequent causes 6f aci-apping of
forgings from the steel 34ChN3MA, especially of forjin$s of largo
cross-sectionj the degree of through forging and thij method of
heat treatment; the main principles to be follo-wed *n establtshing
an annealing process; TTT diagram of the steel 34ChK3kA; practical
application of methods of annealing of wartensitic ateel forging~s
and methods of quality control. This part deals with the
experience gained by 7VTT,, Pisen over a number of years in the
manufacture of type 34ChN314A CrNiM* steel of the following

composition: 0.35% C, 0.55% Mn, 0.27% Si, 0.90%:tCr, ;~3.00% Ni,I
0.25% Mo. These forgings are produced from acidic open hearth',
steel ingots weighing 3.7 to 8 tonso Large torg*ngs from-thl.4
steel have a greater tendency to form flake cracks thain similar
forgings made of other types of steel. The tendency to crack
formation and the quality of the forging in influenoed decisively
by the process of annealing immediately after forging. Two typos
of annealing processes are compared.on the basis of results
achieved in practical work. These are represented in the graph,
Fig.1 (temperature, *C vs. annealing time, hou rm.- a~- continuous:
cooling at a speed of about 50C/hour; b - same, combined with
holding for 15 hours at 6009C; c - new method introduced for
martensitic steel forgings). Originallygthe anneaiing process
according to a, Fig.1, was applied; following that, method h
was introduced but produced no appreciable improvements. A
statistical evaluation of the percentage of rejzcts over three
years of forgings heat treated by the methods a and b, Fig.l.,
was made, investigating two groups of forgings, Group A,B,C of
smaller forgings with a higher degree of through-forgings, i.e.

with ratios of the ingot cross-section to the, forgi"S cross-
section of 8.1 to 10.2, in these the scrapping~*as due to
unsatisfactory mechanical properties after heat treatment. The
second group M,N,L comprised larger ingots with relatively smaller
degrees of through forging (2.3 to 2.8). It w-as found that :t1va,
heat treatments a and b are relatively simple from the
practical point of view but they do not provide a siifficient
guarantee against the formation of flocculi in larger forgings of
this steel. More recently, the heat treatment c, Flig.l, has been
applied, paying particular attention to preventing excess charging
of the furnace and to obtaining a correct position of the forgings
relative to the burners. After charging the furnace and equalizing
the temperature for a short time, the charge 141 cooled down to
200-300*C to ensure an as-complete bainitic tr&nsformation as
possible or even a partial martensitic transformation. The flocculi
form at low temperatures and, therefore, the forginga can be
cooled at a maximum speed but care must be taken that the
temperature of the coolest forging in the furnace d 'oes not drop
below 2000C. Therefore, the lid of the soaking pit,is taken off

closed furnace so as to reduce to a maximum extent:the differences
in temperature inside the large furnace with the large chargp.
The forgings which now have a predominantly bainitic structure are
then subjected to long duration isothermal annealitxg at 650*C Z~r
the purpose of reducing the hydrogen content, eliminating inteirisi
stresses and reducing the hardness of the material, 'IThroughout'
the process, the temperatures have to be carefully iratched b.y I
means of pyrometers. After termination of the isothermal annealing,
the forgings are allowed to cool inside the closed:furnacec
Introduction of this heat treatment had very good results, there
were no rejects of large forgings due to internal tracks; al
statistical analysis showed that after changing over to this type
of heat treatment the classification of the etching tests improved
by 1 to 2 degrees. The second part of the paper, deals with the
influence of the hydrogen content on the mechanical properties,
particularly with the appearance of fractures, &3itensive test

evaluated and the results are supplemented by-resuLts or-
--metallographic -anAlyses.-_ the author states, that 'the infoi-mation
given in the paper does-not contribute anything newto this field
but it does give a systematic treatment of phenomena encountered
during practical work. Plots are included containing inforwdtio'n
on the mechanical proper ies and on the infliience of hydrogen
content (of up to 9- 5 cm~/100 9 of steel) on the me%L~Aianical
properties. Photographs are also included -of fracItuires. Individual
types of failures are dealt with in some detail, particularly, the
fibrous fracture, which is the main subject ofthis part of~the
paper. The tests have shown conclusively that the;.now appLi:,ed
method of heat treatment enables reducing considerably the
hydrogen content of-the forgings. There are 94 figlures, 1 t able

ABSTRACT: A comprehensive description was provided of the experiments lea-
ding to the introduction of vacuum stetis&or the manufacture of forged
litems such as turbine rotors at Skoda Works. The quality of the items
:made from such steels is superior and many items not hitherto capable of
-being produced by conventional techniques became possible. The manufactu-
ring operations involved were described and sampling and quality coatrol
techniques were discussed. The characteristics of forged roto'rs made by
various techniques were compared to illustrate the superiority of those
made by the technique described. Orig. art* has: 9 figures and 2 tables.

ABSTRACT: On the stren-th of previous investigations ~of the aut~ors.(Ref
9) and other chemists (Refs 1-8) it is shown in the present
paper that under conditions under whiqh an~oco P-uneaturatod
alcohol (crotyl alcohol) readil3r ~ splits: of f water and
yieldinC divinyl with 85-68 mole%, tho all;~l carbinol prii-
marily undergoes cleavage, thus yieldinE propylene and formal-
dehyde. The authors investigatca the j,roceais of the c~ltaly'tif"
transformation of allyl carbinol on some d6hydrating, (components
of the catalyet of S. V. Lebedev at 3r,00 aa well as on the si-
licaGel-tantalum catalyst at 3700- Undor theac conditions di-
vinyl is formed from allyl carbinol in small quantities only.
Card 1/2 It was found that on the dehydrating oomponents of the cata-

binol takes place to give propylene and fomaldehyde. The data
obtained do not support the assunption -that' the formation.of
divinyl via the allyl carbinol is possible in the prooess:of
Lebedev. In order to complete the above-meationed data it'must
be said that the transformation of but~mnediol-1-3 on the aehy-
drating component of the catalyst of Ilebedev.takes pl4ce under
the formation of a considerable quantity of propylen6'(Ref 15)-
In the liquid cleavage products of bittanedi.ol -1-3 on-the.Lebe-
dev catalyst methyl alcohol was found. (Ref:16). Comparing the
C,
data obtained by Lebedev and those of,the Tiresent paper it May
be assumed that butanediol -1-3 ' SPUts off in the begin-
ning one molecule of water and is converted to allyl carb1nol
which is cleft under the influence of,the dehydrating com;ponent
to give propylene and formaldehyde. The lattor is reduced1to
methyl alcohol (Scheme). There are 1 table and 26 references,
17 of which are Soviet.
