Experimental Animals.
Orig Pub : Farmakol. i Toksikologiya, 1957, 20, Ile 2, 35-40.
Abstract j A sodium phosphate solution containing P32 was given
subcutaneously to rats, each rat receiving 3-6 microouries.
Tvro hours later 1.3-1.5 m&/kg of strophanthin or 3-3.5
mg/kg of corglycon were given subcutaneously. Follwing
the injection of strophanthin the rate of restoration of the
phosphorus containing compounds was increased in the heart,

TITLE-. Experiments for automatic testing of welds with ultrasonic test
method
PERIODICAL,- Schweisstechnikq no. 4, 1960t 124-127
TEXT: The author gives a brief review on destruction-free testing methods
of welding seams and cites advantages and disadvantages of X-and gammaray
as well as of ultrasonic test mothodg. fie concludes that ultrasonic test-
ing can unhesitat~ingly be used for preliminary testing, and only in case of
doubt the more expensive X-and gammarky method should additionally be applied.
He then mentions some fundamentals of the ultrasonic testing method. Accor-
ding to the author, an ultrascnic tlest method should meet the following re-
quirements~ 1) discovering of till important weld defects, 2) reporting on
type of defect; 3) location of defect', 4) test technique to be automated
as simple as possible. He states that it is impossible to design an ultra--
sonic testing device including accessories which would meet all four re.-
quirements simultaneously,, The method described in the following, devel-

oped at the Spawalnictwa Institute in Gliwice, emphasizes the discovering
of all important weld defects thereby neglecting the other three require-
ments,. Since the thickness of the testing material influences the size (if
the test head, sheet metal thickness was limited to 30 mm in order to simp-
lify the construction of the accessory equipment.
As shown in Figs. 1 and 2, a movement of the angle
the welding seam is necessary for the distance
s_ (is) resp, s 9 (lb)
test head vertically to
at constant wa.,e angle of incidence whereby s stands for wave transition and
C, for seam width. This movement of the test head guarantees the screening
of the entire -:ross-section of the seam, whereby, in case of shifting accor-
ding to formula (!a), the initial position of the test head has to be selec-
ted in such a way that the distance of its beam exit from the seam edge will
amount to an integral multiple of half of the wave transition s. The au-
thor then mentions the difficulties in catching the reflected 7eam by the
receiver crystal which to a certain extent could be overcome by a shutter
movement of the test head, The discovery of laminar defects which run

perpendicular to the seam, such as transverse cracks, is doubtful despite
,~,.'nutter movement and cannot be hindled by the later described equipment,
The disuovery of laminar defects located at about the center of the scam
thickness depends upon tile size of the receiver crystal and tile angle of in-
cidence of the ultrasonic wave, The dependence of the length d of (assumed)
rectangular crystals upon sheet thickness V, angle of incidence/~ and test
head angled. is based on the formula
d = g - tan/3 - COS4 (2)
For testing of seams of larger thicknesses it seems advisable to place sev-
eral receiver crystals which are electrically parallel connected in a test
head aside from one transmitter crysta3, iis shown in Fig.g. Values for
this type of test arrangement are given in Table 2, Tile angle of incidence-
/3 should not be selected smaller than 500 since this would complicate the
detection of defects. The location of defects should at least be detected
tQ such an extent to decide whether the defect is mt the surface (penetra-
tion notches) or within the seam.
The author then describes the two newly designed models: one for testing of
welding seams in horizontal position and the other one for testing in verti-

cal as well as in horizontal position at a vertical wall, The first model
carries the ultrasonic set and the water container on the auxiliary equip-
ment which is built as a cart. The second model requires placing of set
and water container separate from auxil3ary equipment, Fig, 10 shows
schematically the driving mechanism of model 1, A wire cable (5) pivoted
to the disk on the bevel gear (1) causes a movement of test head (4) en-
closed in an aluminium frame perpendicular to the welding seam, and sim-
ultaneously squeezes the coil (7) which accomplishes the movement of the
head in the opposite direction. The movement of' the largeb2vel gear (1)
is caused with the aid of the small bevel gear (2) fixed at the end of
the drive shaft (3). The latter's disk mounts - also pivoted- a con-
necting rod (8) which accomplished the shutter movement of the test head.
Water, serving as transducer, is led from the cor&iiner vin the frame (9)
attached to the test head between the tLst her~d and the surface of the
test piece. One turn of' the larL.-e bevel gear causes a move of 2 cm for
the entire set along the seam. Fig. 11 shows schematically the model.
with ultrasonic set and water container, while Fig. 12 shows a photo of'
the equipment, The auxiliary equipment for testing of seams in vertical
position and in horizontal position at a vertical wall is shown in Fig.. 13.

After finishing the test of a welded section of the length of the rod under
the same distancez test head - welding seam, this distance is changed by a
section comparative to the length of a transmitter crystal with the aid of
an adjusting screw, and testing can be started over again.
Laboratory tests carried out with the models described revealed that tested
welding seams contained typical welding defects such as pores, slag, slag
streaks, root defects and penetration notches as well as sections without
any internal defects. The results of the ultrasonic test were compared
with X-ray test results. One series of seams had been X-rayed first and
then tested with ultrasonic equipment in order to find out whether or not
all radiographically discovered defects were also recorded by the ultrasonic
method. In the second series of seams, the results of the ultrasonic test
were radiographically checked. The comparative investigations revealed
that the designed models had been capable to clearly detect slag streaks
and root defects as well as larger slaF and lore clusters. The recording
of smaller clusters was not always certain. These defects could well be
detected by increasing the sensitivity of the set, but if the increase was
applied, even the bead and the coarse-grained z;trticture of the seam transi-

tion zone caused signals on the oscillograph screen. Penetration notches
are generally shown only if they have sharp edges. As a summary it can be
said that the mostly occuring larger welding seam defects are well recorded
by the designed models and that a testing speed of 0.2 m/min has been rea..
ched. There are 2 tables, 13 figures and 6 references: 3 Soviet-bloc and

TITLE: Effect of peroral administration of a Naphasolin solution on the gastric
mucosA and liver of experimental rats
rb-
SOMCE: Kiserlotes orvostudomany, v- 17, no. 6, 1965, 581-584
TOPIC TAGS: rat, drug effect, gastroenterology, liver, digestine drug
ABSTRACT: Naphasolin solution, used in the conservative treatment of disturbances
in stomach evacuation after resection, was administered orally to experimental rats
over an extended period of time in order to investigate whether any change in the
lining of the stomach or in the liver is caused by the drug. The macroscopic and
microscopic examinations performed indicated no pathological changes. This finding
led to the conclusion by the authors that the peroral administration of Naphasolin
does not cause any chanjes in the gastric mucosa and liver of man either. Orig.

A general review of this subject is followed by a desi-riptiot, of tile incidence of
leptospiror,is in Bulgaria. The disease is common. The necessity of a closer study
for the determination of the types of leptospirae and of the rodents, who are car-
riers of the disease, is emphasized.

Rats were immunized with typhoid If-antigen by the s.c. or i.v. route and the per-
oxidase and catalase activities of the blood were studied concurrently with the ag-
glutination titre. The peroxidase activity very soon showed a considerable in-
crease, followed by a decrease which coincided with a slivht increase of catalase
activity accompanyinj? the appearance of antibodies. The findings are discussed.
