ABSTRACT: The article first describes the Porcheville (spelling query) power station near Paris. The station is described in considerable detail without particular comment. The second part of the article deals with the special features of the technology, arrangement, con- struction and design of French power stations. The use of the monoblock with one boiler per turbine is fi-rst mentioned. Details are given of the eoui-oment included in a typical block, special note being made of the fact that this includes the cooling water system. The effic- iency of French power stations is said to be hiC~h and t:ae reasons for this are analysed. The arrangement of the power station is discussed and the compactness of Card 1/2 the arrangement is comT nted upon. Consideration is given to such features as water pieparation, ash handling, fuel handlinE; and architectural arrangement. Modera themal power stations in France. Orig Pub Kristallegrafiya, 1956, 1, no 1, 123-131 Abstract A measurement was made of the intensity I of the molecular scattering of light in quartz in the temperature range from 15 to 6000. A beam of polarized light (the total ra- diation from a mercury lamp, group of mercury lines 4360, 4o78, and 4o47 A and the line 5460 A) was used. Up to 4000, -the value of I increases linearly and then diminis- hes sharply. The existence of this sharp ~\-type maxl- mum of scattering near the point of the phase transition of quartz (" , 5730) leads to the conclusion that the fluctuations of the dielectric constant of quartz Card 1/2 USSR/Optics Physical Optics K-5 Abs Jour Ref Zhur - Fizika, No 5, 1957, 12917 become reinforced as this point is approached. Under the experimental conditions, the crystal was heated ununiformly. Visual and photographic observations have shown that the portion of the crystal between the 'X and phases is a region of strong optical Irregularity of the crystal (mole- cular opalescence), similar to a fog ba;Ad of thi,.-kness 0.5 -- 3 mm. The possible molecular mechanism of formation of sharp optical Irregularities In the crystal at the tempera- ture of phase transformations is considered. It is conclu- ded tha-, in the case of quartz, there exists a single tran- sition near 5730. All the phenomerna are reversible. Card 2/2 VINOGRADOV, V.V.; VMLICHKINA. S.N. Title : Moleculiw Scattering of Light ando(,-_4YT:r&nsforn&tion of Quartz Orgi Pub : Kristallograftya, 1956, 1, No 1, 123-131 Abstract : Intensity of molecular scattering of light was measured (for the group of Hg-lines 436o, 4078 and 4047 A. and the line 54W A) in quartz, in the tem- perature interval 15 to 6000. Up to W intensity of scattered light in- creases linearly with temperature; it risen sharply in the interval 400- 5730 and than drops sharply. From the occurence of a scattering maxim- in the vicinity of the point ofc~*ptS3 phase transition (5730) the conclu- sion is reached concerning increased fluctuations of dielectric coxistant of quartz near this point. Detected and qmatitatively studied vas; the phenomenon of reversible molecular opalescence near the point of polywr- phous trvmformation. Possible molecular mcbAnlex of formtion in. the crystal.of sharp optical heterogeneities at transformation temperature is discuzised. Lanaiu'and Khalatnikov predicted an amplification of sound absorption in tha pbass, correspcnding to the low temperature in the proximity of tho A -point. For the purpose of confirming this phenomenon the authors ,carried out experiments on the absorption of sound In a seignetts salt in the vicinity of its, upper CURIE point. The authors applied the im- pulse method for the measuring of the damping of.the sound in the mono- crystal of the 9*ignette salt. The impulses of the transversal oscilla- tions were transferred to a foil of the seignette salt which was fitted in a thermostat. A diagram shows the here found dependence of the amplitude coefficient q of the sound absorption upon temperature. The results obtained here show the following. - The anomalous absorption of sound in the care of a phase transformation of the second order, which was predicted by Lk"!- DAU and KHtUATNIKOV actually takes place in a solid body. This phano- monon has its characteristic peculiarities in a saign*tte-olectricum. a transversal sound wave with a certain polarization suffers an anomalous 56-4-42/52 The Absorption of Sound on the Occasion of a Phase Transformation absorption and the absorption of the sound increases in both phases on the occasion of the approximation of the temperatures of the phases at the A,_points. The case investigateA here was explained already in a theoretical work by LANDAU, the corresponding results will be explained in it detailed paper. On the basis of the results discussed in the pre- sent paper also an observation made by H.B. WHTINGTON, Pbys. Rev., Vol. 72, p 321 (1947) is explainable. (With 1 illustration). The authors z~easured the absorption of longitudinal acoustic waves pro-, 'Pagating along the edge of the cryptal cubic lattice. The measurements were made at .5 and 15 M by a method described'earlier (ZhETF v. 32, 935, 1957). Particular at- tention.was paid to the thermal conditions of the experiments. The invegtigat-ed crys. tal samples were in acoustic contact with a metallic thermostat-controlled delay line This entire system was placed in turn in a massive copper thermostat isothermal with the'delay line. Sifiilar results were obtained for the absorption coefficient at both frequencies, but at 5.M the maximum absorption was one-fourth that for 15 M. Re- duction df -the ex perimehtal data yields a relaxation time T = 1 x 10-9/(o - T) see, which agrees in order of mdgnitude with the value obtained by others. The authors were also able to obtain for the first time the value of d9/dy (9 - phase transition 1/2 ACC NRs AP7003.531 temperature, p = pressure) from acoustic measurements,, 'getting a value 9 x 10-9 Aeg-cm2/dyne which agrees with the published.data. Fiziki, 1957, Vol- 33, Nr 4, PP- 1075 - 1076 (USSR) ABSTRACTs The evaluation of the piezoelectric properties of a Rochelle-e-14 crystal shows that a deformation that stews from the propasatl'CE. of an accoustio wave brings about a polarization of the crystal along its Beignette-electric axis x. It is therefore important -to invep Agate the absorption of these waves also thent when the arysta: is already from the beginning pro-pol&rized by an ex- ternal electrostatic field in the direction of the x-axis. This case was experimentally examined. It was shown that at tempera- tures above the Curie point the sound absorption does not de- I-end on the external field. At temperatures several degrees low- er than the Curie point the sound absorption is only slightly depandgnt on the external field. At temperatures lying only 0,1 Card 1/2 to 0,2 C below the Curie point the influence of the elootro- 56-4-53/54 The Influence Exerted by an Electrostatic Field on the Sound Absorption in Seignette Salts static field on the sound absorption is very great.
