This apparatus works in the 4,000 Me band. The wiring diagrams of the transmission, relay and receiving statio:as, as well as a ccmparison between helix-cou-pling and wave-guide coupling are given. The apparatus has the following principal charaoteristioss working input level: 5 Mw; amplifying on this levelt 28 dB; work ng output level 3w, noise factor be- low 30 dB. The AM-PM converting Is defined by the formulat 'kk - 13.2 2 (1+S 2_S:21 1/2 degree/dB 6P 2 wheret S1 - the relative amplitudD at the output of the 3i6-nal of a level Card 1/3 24124 H/009/60/000/003/003/004 Travelling-wave am.Plifier A205/A126 which is with 30 d:3 lower and S2 - the relative amplitude of the new signal obtained at, the output. The optimum dimensions of the helix-coupling are dircussed E,nd the author emphasizes the fact that the screening effect of the helix-coupling has also been taken into account in the design of this coL.pling, which deviates from the conventional types. The dimensions refer only to coaxial helix-couplings that have an identical phase-velocity and arE coiled in opposite direction. The calculations refer to endless wires with dielectric and magnetic coating spanned in infinite homogenous spaces The graph for determining maxi- mum field intensity is shown in Fig. 2 and is based on the equation M(gor2 _(;o 2- In 0.89 g 0 r2 2 (17) Card 1/0 21785 H/009/61/000/002/002/002 D020/D105 Designing of surface wave guides where g0is the maximum field intensity and r21 the external radius of the coating. This equation is derived from formulas expresaing the electric and mzgnetic intensities and satisfying boundary conditions. The relation between maximum field intensity and the dielectric constant is shown in Fig. 3, while the relation between maximum field intensity and permeability is shown in Fig. 4. Both graphs refer to a conductor with radius r1of 1.2 mm, external radius of Its coating r2 of 1.5 mm and an operating fre- quency of 3,000 Mops. Fig. 5 shows the values of phase velocity and group velocity, both of which are relative to the speed of light, as functions of r2 for various r2 values. The graphs in this figure valid for conductors T. r a I with polyethylene coating where kir ~' 2.26, indicate that the phase nelocity decreases with the increase of frequency and with the increase in the thick- ness of the coating. The power distribution on the conductor surface is Card 2/10, Y~_ 21785 H/009/61/OOQ/002/002/002 D020/D105 Designing of surface wave guides shown in Fig. 6 and determined from the formula 2( 2j -HO) (1) )j 2 + 2~ G(g r)- -(g r r) H, (Jgor) + H(4)(JgOr r (27) 0 0 ) __ o0go 0 1 Ugo r 1 11, io m in Fig. 6 indicatoo the decades of g 0r, where G(gor) is tenfold if m - 0. Power propagation in the space surrounding the conductor is expressed by the formula P 0 M j 12 In 0,89 go r2 + 015] (31) TTF 0 to eo where 1 0 is the amplitude of power intensity. The relation between power prODagation in the coating and the power propagation in the space surrounding the conductor is expressed by Card 21785 H/009/61/000/002/002/002 D020/D105 Designing of surface wave guides P In 0,89 g Or2 (35) PO 'CiAr - I (;00_1 In 0.89 g 0r2 + Oj5 and shown in Fig. 7 as a function of r 2 for various r2 values when 7_0 r1 polyethylene coating in used. Determination of wave impedance of surface wave guides is particularly advantageous in practical designing when exa- mining the matching of an induction horn with the. surface wave guide or of 2 different surface wave guides with each other. This is illustrated in Fig. 8. The wave impedanoe Z is expressed by the formula Z - 138 log 0068 (38) 90r 2 Card 4/10 21785 H/00 61/000/002/00~/002 D020YD105 Designing of surface wave guides which is based on -the relation between wave impedancet by the equation P M I z 12 2 0 (36) If the external wire diameter is of a constant value, the wave impedance decreases with the maximum field intensity, i.e. when the coating thickness, irequency, dielectric constant and permeability are increased. If a con- stant coating thickness is presupposed, the wave impedance decreases with the increase of the wire diameter. The total loss of a surface wave guide is composed of line loss and field lose. The total loss of a surface wave guide as a function of maximum field intensity shows a minimum at a certain value of maxlmum field intensity and is shown in Fig. 11. This minimum re- presents the optimum value of maximum field intensity. The maximum transmistAble average power expreased by the, equation Ats Vis Pmax - 5,35 2) (T T,,)'max (62) 1- 2- 3 can be calculated on the basis of the maximum permissible overheating of the wire. To design surface wave guides certain data are specifiedv such as transmission distance, operating frequenoy band and the size of the space surrounding the conductor, which can be kopt clear from interferences. This space determines the maximum limit of the wave field expansion. The other data will be determined by the designer. The optimum value of the maximum fieLd intensity, with reference to the i-f of the band, is obtained by repeated trials. From this value which inclu-Jes all necessary data, the required thickness of the ooat.,~,nj? is determined. The optimum maximum field intensity is, however, not always available, especially in cases of extremely long surface wave guides. In such cases the designing should be based on the permissible minimum V.eld intensity and the possible maximum horn size. There are 14 figures and 6 references: 2 Soviet-bloc and 6 non- Soviet-bloc.
