However, as regards collection of sugar,, the vari-

are the varieties of noz=1 type. The variety AI-3
is resistant to cercosporiasis, bas few blossoms
and relatively more foliage. Of the barvested
varieties, as regards collection of ougar, the var-
iety PZM-4 stands out,, but it in weakly resistant
to eercosporiasis and has little foliage; the 3east
productive variety is WM-3. The variety Yanash
(AI-1) proved to bave the most sugar. The more
yroductive of the sugar varieties is the variety

Abstract : Results of experiments made in 1953-1954
to study the
effects of various doses of fertilizers and different
irrigation rates. With high soil fertility the most
effective action was gotten from high doses of
fertilizers.

ABSTRACT: The formation of toxic lipid substances and

their role and relationship In acute radiation sickness were

lipid substances (called natural rediomimetic,. NR) were

further
tests NR was found not only In the liver but also In other

TITIE; Restoration of the viability of yeast colls of varying

PERIODICALs Radioblolv~SJIYao. V.3' nool, 1963. 59-44
The cells- be- 12 -stiains,.of yeast -of varying ploidy
were irradiated in thin layers with a-particlea and wero then
tested for viability by plating out on wort-agar. The sources of
radiation used were 239 Pu, giving a*dose of 50 rad/min at a
distance of 13 mw from t3he surface. and 210po giving at 8 mm a
dose of 10 200 rad/min. Irradiation was continued for periods
ranging from a few minutes to several hours, and was carried out
at I - 2 aC and at room temperature. The results showed that the
LDulo was dependent on ploidy, the haploid strain being the least
and the diploid strain the most radioresistant. With the higher
ploidy up to 6 radioresistance declined in one set of strains
-(Mortimer), but increased in a set obtained from another source

(Ephrussi). Recovery from the effect of irradiation was observed
with strains of ploidy 2 or greater, but not with haplo.-id strains.
Thus, 26~,~ of the cells of a diploid strain were viable immediately
after irradiation in a dose of 16.2 krad, but after maintenance
on plain agar this proportion rose to 76io after 24 hours and 93',~
after 48 hours. It was also shown that the restoration does riot
depend on the kind of radiation (X, a or y particles) producing
the'injuries. There are 4 figures and 3 tables.

Abstract Z~-uthorsl English summary modified_7: A group
of 20
*sc izopftrenies was compared to a group of 20 aphaties
by means
of K~:-aepelinls definition of schizophasia. It appeared
that
schizophasia was the terminal stage of schizophrenia,
most fre-
quently its paranoid form. The first attack is usually
very
sudden with speech incoherence and recurring catatonic
traits.
The importance of the premorbid level of intelligence is
evalua-
ted. Substantial differences between the schizophrenics
and
the aphatics were found in all criteria used, such as
language
and association experiments. The schizophrenic group did
not
show disturbed phatic functions. 8 Tables. 2 WAPtArn- A

"The Effect of Psilocybin in Chronic Schizophrenia."
Prague, Activitas Nervosa Superior, Vol 8. No 2, Jun 66, pp
222-223
Abstract; The effect of psilocybin was tested on 30 paranoid
schizophrenics
who had been sick for at least 15 years. In chronic
schizophrenics
psilocybin effect was substantially smaller than in normal
subjects. Of
the clinical pattern of psilocybin into~dcation in healthy
subjects, only
involuntary laughter and euphoria were noticed in the patients.
Optical
phenomena, which are the most characteristic in healthy people,
appeared
only in half of the patients. Negativism alone was more
frequent than in
normal subjects. No references. Submitted at the 4th Conf. of
Exper.
and Clin. Study of Higher Norv, Functions, at Mar. IAzno, 12-15

ABSTRACT- Tht3 mGchanisia of the catatonic stupor was
investigated. Tho influence
of the two drugs mentioned on the extension of cataleptic
conditions was studied.
Only 5 patients could be used in the experiments because of the
rhre occurrence-of:
the disease, Both drugs vere administered in the form of an
intramuscular Jenj-ection
both increased the extension by about 60%. rjPRS7

The author describes a method of comparing the du-
rations of life of different types of equipment serving the
same pur se without keeping records of individuM Fife
lengths; trese methods have been considered by Goodman
Amer. Statist. Assoc. 48 (1953), 503-5W]. The author
shows, for the case of three types, several replacement.
ID cies which are generalizations of poh.ciesconsisting of
'i a
p
the replacement of failed items b:7 items of another type
(so called "switch" Iii i and of the policy involving.
a random choice of Xpe Itcylepse) which is to replace the failed
item. Various procedures are.compared and analogous
procedures for mom than three'types are indicaltd. A
constant intensity of removal and a continuous replace-
ment is assumed tbroughout (an item is re laced im-
,!Pediate)y after it has failed). ja= (Prague)'
