Trawling at the Maximum Depth of the World Ocean (Traleniye
na maksimaltnoy glubine mirovogo okeana)
Priroda, 1958, Nr 3, pp 70-71 (USSR)
The "Vityazill expeditionary vessel of the Institut okeanolo-
gii AN SSSR (Institute of Oceanology of the AS USSR did some
IGY research of the Marianas Trench on its first cruise. The
results obtained showed that the trench has a flat bottom, 1
to 3 km wide, at a depth ranging between 10,000 and 10,900 m
between 141051tand 142 015' west longitude. Maximum depth in
this region is 10,960 m. It was found out that the level
bottom of the trench becomes bipartite in a westward direction,
owing to a small extended upheaval. Research on the "Vityazl"
included trawling for fauna in the deepest part of the trench.
On a former trawling expedition in 1953, fauna had been ob-
tained from a depth of 9,950 m in the Kuril-Kamchatka trench.
The apparent absenci of fauna on the trench bottom is explain-
ed by either an extreme rarity of specimens a total absence in
Trawling at the Maximum Depth of the World Ocean

this particular area, or an absence due to life-suffocating
masses of all kinds of organic sediments or intermittent vol-
canic action in this region.

ABSTRACT:
The species of crustacea Decapoda in
fossile state (about 500
species) is known since the Lower
Triassic time. The shrimp
Antrimpos madagascariensis from the
Permo-Triassic time (Ref 10)
is regarded as the earliest
representative of this species. In
the USSR decapoda were known
only from the Jurassic and later
sediments. The finding of
decapoda exuviae in the north-western
part of 'the
Zapadno-Sibirskaya nizmennost' (West Siberian basin)
in the
Permo-Triassic or Permian will be of importance for the
solution of several problems. This finding was made by L. D.
Miroshnikov in the core of a borehole in the district of the
Ust'-Yeniseyokiy harbor in the year 1953. The tuffacions-

depth of 1200-1300 m and more and forms the basis of the meso-
zoic deposits. They are delta formations. In this mass exuviae
are found which (according to M. Ye. Lyutkevich) indicate a
Lower Triassic, according to N. I. Novozhilov, however, Upper
Permian. Furthermore floral remains of Permian characteristics
(according to E. N. Kara-Murza) and insect exuviae of the Lower
Triassic time (according to Ye. E. Bekker-Migdisova) were
found..
This mass is described in detail in reference 3, its insects

TITLE: Paleotemperatures and the Problem of the Origin of
the Abyssal Fauna .
PERIODICAL: Priroda, 1959, Nr 5, pp 21 - 28 (USSR)
ABSTRACT: The author points out the strict interdependence
between the atomic weight of the oxygen in calcium
carbonates and the temperature at which the latter
was formed. This, he says, opens the possibility
'j.ing the age of organic bodies possessing
of estimA
calcifer"Id skeletons. But the accuracy of such
estimates, he says, depends upon the certainty that
no interchange of oxygen with the surrounding me-
dia has occurred since the formation of the mineral
in the bone. The experiments and calculations so
far made in this respect, give ground for expec-
tation that the loss of heavy oxygen since the Pre-
Cambrian period was not great, and that its reduc-

In the treatment of thermal burns the author used
aseptic hunud dressmiys con-
taining a 0.25% solution of streptocid. Into the
dressing rubber drains werc. r.-
serted, through which the surface of the burns was
sprinkled 3 - 4 timoos da~!%' with
the solution of streptocid mentioned. The patient
was treated also generally (ad-
the wo~mi
ministration of analgesic agents, removal of
blisters, washing .
toilet soap. warm solution of physiological sall
and 70,11c so~unon of alcolhol, plasina
transfusion, etc.). The dressing was changed after
10 davs. on the face after -5 -8
days. Using this method the author observed
considerabfy slightor suppura!ion in
comparison with Davidson and Bettman's method. The
period of recovery was
also shorter. Patients treated according to this
method are almost relieved of
pain. the necrotic tissues are rapidly separated
and the scars are soft and elastic.
The author's conclusions are based on observations
of 288 patients. Recoverv
following burns of the second degree took place on
the average in 14 days, foilow-
ing burns of the third degree in 57 - 58 days.
