histogenecia,
embryogenesis and regenerntion; 8) radiation sickness. The trends
for the coming 7 years as indic!tted at the = Party Congress
include as well investiGVtiOLIS on the evolution of inhibitory
and
excitatory processes, conditioned reflexes, the nervous
mechanisms
of humoral regulation processeE, Rnd the effect of various
physical
fRetors on the orginnism (penetrating radiation and ultrasonics)
These studies aim at the alnboration of new methods, the
selection
of adequate indices and for the interpretation of results
(instead
of the study of conditioned motor reflexes as hitherto). Studies
on comparative patholody and the evolution of organic patholo--Sy
of ONS will be carried out on: a) coordination between the cere-

of defence.mechanisms, particularly the organic and functional

of V/

overhead
expenses. These problems being for scientists, and the

will participate in these efforts -- m4knly in the elaboration
of

TEXT. The present paper is based on a lecture given at the Second UNO
Con-
ference on the Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy, deneva, 1958. The
report Includso
observations made on brains of various animals irrddiated by
different methods, '
and results allowing conclusions as to the differing sensitiveness of
the vari-;
ous cerebral levels. Alimentary conditioned motor reflexes in
chickenoand pi-
geons were found to persist even after a relatively long protracted
penetraiing
radiation. At the same time, however, considerable alterations were
observed in
the condition of stem centers. The opticogenic catalepsy of
chickens,which is
described, is caused by an inhibition which partly develops In the
upper cerebml
levels, but chiefly in the brain stem. This inhibition Is removed by
X-rays,

whereupon the chickensare left in a highly excited state. The
effect of amina-
zine an radiative injuries was examined on 7 chickens. 0.0 '01 g
of aminazine per
kg of weight was intii)duced into the craw and found to remova
cataleptic inhibi-
tion much like X-rays. Since the more striking effects of
penetrating radiation
under the experimental conditions considered are localized at
lower cerebral
levels (subcortex in higher animals), the functions or cortex or
fore brain are
Impaired to a lesser degree and are compensated sooner. There are

TITLE: The evolution of the higher nervous activity and the psyche
PZUODIC&L: Priroday no. 9, 1962, 44-49
TEXT: This popular article contains data on the development of the
nervous
systean and the various stages of development of the higher nervous
activity:
excitability, sensitivity, instinct, emotion~and psyche. Polish
scientist
Professor J. Dembowski and Soviet scientists have established in
experiments
on irotozea (parameciumi) that acquired reactions exist in all
living"beings
although they are manifested differently at variou levels. The
statement by
American physiologists Shuradger and Culler that conditioned
reflexes can be
elaborated in the spinal card has been refuted by Soviet scientists
since,
according to Pavlov's theory, the conditioned reflex is the highest
form of
adaption in evolutional development. The author cons 'edes that
there no psychic
functibn-exists without a physiological-process. He concludes that
physiolo-
gical.processes in a thinking brain and the thinking process are
not two

ABSTRACT: To increase work productivity, the authors have
modernized
multiple-disc roller shears at the Zavod im. Maslennikova
(Plant imeni Maslennikov). The technical characteristics of
this modernized steel band-catting machine (wit-hout winding
device) are as followss maximum width of the band to be out
-200 mm, thickness of the band - from 0.1 to 2 mm, maximum
number of shear-pairs (for 2mm band) - 6, diameter of the
shears - 150 mm, capacity of the electric motor - 3.5 kilo-
watts,- and cutting speed - from 40 to 80 m per minute.

TITLEs Effect of gamma radiation on the intensity of the
nuclear
quadrupole resonance signal
PERIODICALi Izvestiya Akademii nauk Latviyskoy SSR, no. 3,
1961, 59-6o
TEM When applying a radio-frequenoy field to a crystalline
sample,
the energy of which equals the difference of the quadrupole
energy level,
a characteristic absorption line is observed. The spread of
the'
values of the gradient q from nucleus to nucleus determines
the width of
the line observed. If Q changes to such a degree that it does
not con-
tribute any more to the line observed, the intensity of the
nuclear
quadrupole resonance (nqr) decreases. This effect was used
for observing
the effect of gamma radiation on the intensity of the KCIO 3
line. The
nqr signal was observed by means of the super generator
method having
Zeeman modulation. The solenoid consisting of 12,500 windings
was filted
over the aluminum container which contained 30 g KCIO 3* A
modulator
frequency of 30 cps and a voltage of 4 v were found to be the

observation conditions. The nqr signals of the C135 nuclei of
irradiated
and nonirradiated samples were recorded at room temperature by
photo-
graphing the oscilloscope screen. The irradiation dose was varied
between 200,000 and 400tOOO r. Only a small reduction of the signal
was
observed at the lower limit of the irradiation dose. Repeated photo-
graphic recording of the signal daring maximum irradiation produced
an average reduction of the signal heighlt by 15-20%. It is assumed
that
the effect of the gamma quanta (which produced yellow coloring of
the
sample) causes a change of the energy distribution in the crystal.
The
gradient of the inner field of the crystal is altered and the
number of
resonating nuclei decreases. [Abstracter's notes The photograph of
the
signal is not reproducible.] There are 1 figure and 2 referencess
