At present there exists no uniformity of views about the
regenerative capacity of
lung parenchyma. The author approached this problem
experimentally. Parti~ldes-
truction of one lung was performed an 133 adult rats by
one of 3 different methods:
-resection by ther-
ligation followed by resection of a lung segment lateral
wedge
mocautery, or production of a round penetrating defect
by thermocautery. The ant-
mals were sacrificed after varying time intervals, from
one day to 12 months af-
ter the operation, and the affected lungs were studied
histologically, Sections were
stained with H and E and with a variety of special
stains. A detailed description
of the rnicroscopic findings is presented. Thewound
healed by scar formation, as
well as by regeneration of the epithelial elements;
regeneration of muscle and of
nerves was not observed. Epithelial regeneration
originates from the bronchial
and alveolar lining, commences immediately after the
trauma and parallels con-
nective tissue proliferation. Solid epithelial bands,
gland-like spaces lined by a
single layer of cuboidal epithelial cells, or true
bronchiolar- sprouts can be formed.
The supporting mesenchymal framework of such regenerated
bronchioles and air
spaces lacks a regular structure and is devoid of
elastic fibres. The newly formed
air spaces must be differentiated from pre-existing
alveoli whose lining cells have
undergone cuboidal metaplasla due to Interference with
their blood supply. The so-
called 'idenamatoid structures' of several authors which
are associated with re-
parative processes in the lungs may, therefore,
represent either new formations
or old alveoli. The author holds that generally the
regenerated bronchioles and air
spaces possess no significant functional capacity, As
the young connective tissue
is transformed Into dense scar tissue, the regenerated
epithelial structures are
compressed and eventually undergo complete atrophy: only
In a very few cases did
the author obsche transformation of newly formed air
spaces into true pulmonary

alveoli, Inasmuch as the pulmonary parenchyma
regenerates only to a liTn ed ex
tent,- healing of the wound is accomplished mainly'by
scar formation. When the re-
section of lung tissue was preceded by ligation, the
scar was larger and coarser
than when termocautery was employed, this was-due to
more extensive atelectasis
and fibrosis of the adjoining parenchylba after ligation.

Experiments were carried out in 44 white rats; 1-2
months after right-sided
pneumonectomy a part of the left lung was resected.
At various intervals after the
second operation, the animals were sacrificed and
the remaining part of the left
lung was examined. It could be shown that after a
pneumonectemy the other lung
in capable of extensive compensatory alterations.
viz.: (1) opening of'physio-
logicoX stelectases; (2) slight dilatation of the
alveoli: (3) hypertrophy of the
closure plates at the entrance of the alveoli and
their elastic fibre apparatus. as
well an of the smooth musculature of the bronchi and
arteries; (4) hype rplasia of
the elements of the alveolar wall*. The lung rest
appears to be enlarged, not so
much an the result of emphysema,but as the result of
the alterations mentioned.

hypertrophy'.

producing summation
tapes based on the method of controlled directional reception of
seismic waves. The
installation consists of a magnetic recorder, amplifiers and a
multichannel summation
unit. The speed of seismogram analysis is increased by basing the
multichannel sum-
mation unit on delay lines equal in number to the channels to.be
added. Taps are
made from each line corresponding to the various directions of
summation, as well as
taps from the various delay lines corresponding to one and the
same direction of sum-
mation. These taps are connected through decou~plers and
resistors placed at the in-
