ABSTRACT: The author examines the nature of the damping of the free bouncing
oscillations of a railroad car that has a double suspension and is char-
acterized by the presence of friction in its central or box suspension;
examined also is the relationship between the period of these oscilla-
tions and their amplitude. The author concludes that: 1) The damping
of the oscillations does not follow the law of arithmetical progression,
as is true in the case of a single suspension with only a single source
of friction; 2) the oscillation period is a function of the oscillatory
amplitude and of the force of friction---iis a result of which the pheno-
menon of resonance does not occur. So long as the oscillatory ampli-
~Gatrd 1/2 tudes are small, it is only the box springs that oscillate; the central

suspension will not then be functioning. In this connection the author recommends
the use of shock absorbers which have no f!-iction band and in which the friction
forces increase with increasing oscillatory amplitudes.

ABSTRACT: The purpose of the investigation vas to determine the infl-uence of radia-
tion and photochemical effects on the chemical state of atoms of radioactive phos-
phorus in potassium chloride. The KC1 crystals (pure and with CaCl2 admixture) used
as targets for proton irradiation were grown by the Kiropoulos method. 7he crystals i
were placed in light tight boxes and exposed to an external beam of protons of 660-
Mev enekgy with a maximum total proton flux 2 x 1012/cm2. The crystals were also
exposed to light in the F band (560 run) for different durations, after vhich the dis-'!;
thr
tribution of the activity of the radioactive phosphor was determined for the _;W ee
produced fractions (phosphate, phosphite, and hypophospbite) by a procedure described
in an earlier paper (Izv. AN SSSR, v. 8, 1433, 1961). The results shou that 411umina-

tion of the crystal decreases the yield of the phosphate and phosphite radioactive
phosphorus., and increases the yield of the hypophosphite fraction. After about
three houri; of illumination, the concentrations of the activity of the phosphorus
by fractions change from 35.5) 20, and 44-5% for H3PO4) H3PO3, and H3PO2, to 20, 10, 1
and 70% respectively. In the mixed crystals the redistribution of the activity oc-
curred at a lower speed, and no plateau was reached even after ten hours. Total
bleaching of the crystals, by exposure to 560-nm light for severalldays together with.
a tungsten lamp, showed that after 8 or 10 days the processes reverse, and the activi~
ty of the hypophosphite decreases whereas that of the phosphite and phosphate in-
creases. The effect of proton irradiation on the chemical state of the radioactive
phosphorus was also studied and it was found that proton irradiation first oxidizes
e radioactive phosphorus intensely, after which the rate of oxidation decreases

and reduction of the radioactive phosphate sets in. Possible causes of all the ef-
fects are indicated. The authors'thank G. D. Stoletov for help in irradiating the
targets at the synchrocyclotron of the Joint Institute of Nuclear Research. orig.

Abstract : In cockerels and chicken under pentothal anesthesia, partial removal
of the pancreas and ligature of its ductus decreases the inotropic
effect and the tonic contraction of the stomach produced by vagus
stimulation, vhile the chronotropic effect of vagus stimulation is
not changed except for an increase in the latent period. It is as-
sumed that the effect of pancreas removal is mediated by interfer-
ence vith acetylcholine synthesis. Graphs. Five references, 4 of

ABSMACT: This Author Certificate presents a hydraulic amplifier for a steering
mechanism of a machine on wheels. The amplifier is built into the steering mechanism
and is connected to the steering shaft. It contains a lead element in the form of a
screw, a power cylinder (with its shaft connected to a spline attached to a sector of
the steering mechanism), and a distributor. The latter consists of a casing fixed on
the gear box of the steering mechonism. The casing contains ducts leading to the
working interior of the power cylinder and to its pressure and outflow pipes. A
cylindrical Placed in the casing is located on the ateering shaft, while two
stops limit the axial displacement of the steering shaft. To provide for the indica-
tion of gauge readin f the automatic steering augmented by hand steering. a

sleeve contains openingv for passing of liquid and in motivated by plungers placed in
the casing and connected to the gauge of automatic steering. These plungers interact
with the face surfaces of washers contacting the sleeve. The washers serve as sup-
ports limiting the displacement of the sleeve in the casing (see Fig. 1).

ABSTRACT: An Author Certificate has been issued for a device for the automatic
control of a wheeled vehicle, which includes a duplicating feeler, a feeler-deflec-
tion transducer, an electric gate valve, and a hydraulic steering-gear amplifier. To
simplify the changeover to and from automatic control, it is equipped with a three-
way cock with a handle. The cock's input is connected to a pump, one of its outputs
is connected to a distributing hydraulic amplifier, and its second output is connected

to the electric gate valve. In order to smoothly change the rpm, between the pump
and the cock's input is mounted a throttle. Orig. art. has;- 1 figure.

PURPOSE AND EXALUATION: Written for qualified workers, foremen and tech-
nicians of the metallurgical plants, specially for those working in
the heat treatment shops and engaged in the plant laboratory, to re-
duce spoilage and frequent breakages of machinery. This book gives
up-to-date basic practical information plainly and concisely with
the needed pictures, diagrams and tables at hand for the references
required. Thus it may be compared favorably with Metal Worki!!9 and
Heat Treatment Manual, by Fr. Johnson, 1945, or wilh-The Metallography
of Iron and Steel, by C. Hubert Plant, 1933.
