Title Investigation of magnetic field vortex in an
electrolytic tank
Periodical : Elektrichestvo, 6, 54-59., Je 3.955
Abstract : The author summarizes the existing methods of field
mapping and suggests a method of solving problems
of potential theory with modela in an electrolytic
tank in which he replaces the vortex zones represented
by diffused current sources with an equivalent electrode.
The resulting field is obtained by superposing component
fields of separate electrodes. The author presents the
calculation of the dimensions of tne electrodes and
emphasizes the advantages of his method. He also
describes the use of his method in the study of eddy
magnetic fields of electrical machinery. Eleven diagrams

TITLE: Effect of Hydroelectric -Powerhous e Wings on the Turbine Head
(Vliyaniye formy otkrylkov zdaniya gidroelektrostantBii na napor turbiny)
PERIODICAL: Tr. Gigroproyekta, 1958, Nr 1, pp 74-76
ABSTRACT: Effect of the tailwater wing was studied on a 1: 100 scale model of the
Kuybyshev hydroelectric generating station. Comparative tests were conducted
for two outlines of the walls- (1) the vertical wall and (2) the vertical lower
part of the wal'i with a 1:4 bevel in the upper part. The experiments showed
th-at with the wings arA with the constant turbine discharge, the whirlpool in the
tailwatcr is eliminated and the turbine head increases by 15-20 cm; this value
is practically independeat of the head or discharge of water through turbines
and spillways of the station. The effect of the forebay whirlpool was studied
on a 1:100 scale model of the Stalingzad hidrcelectric station. The upper wing

of the powerhouse increases the turbine head by 12-18 cm as compared with
the case of connection with the powerhouse by a guiding earth dike. The
experiments showed that, in the case of low-head and medium-head hydro-
electric stations, the vertical wings have an appreciable positive effect on their
head and output.

TEXT: In this work the authors! aim was to secure information on
certain insufficiently-studied aspects of the sodiothermic method
of TiCl reductions The effect of subsequent additions of the redu-
cer on the dietrVibution of the reaction productej the character of
the temperature distribution with respect to the reactor's height;
and the ~-,nfluence of thermal conditions on the sponge s fractional
composition. Their app&~atus consisted of a distillation cruciblet
a feeder with a stop-rod and levelerg and a reactor. The tempera-
ture waeadintained at 650 - 7500 or, above 8000 during the experi.-
mentso Three thermocouples were fitted to the side of the beakerv

their positions correeponding to the original level of the liquid
Nap -the final. level of -the reaction produata, and the level of the
gaseous phase. Teets *a the distribution of the reaction products
in the interval 650 - 7500 disclosed that the addition of liquid Na
in the first and second periods of the reaction decreases the size
of the void at the bottom of the beakerp which thus permits the 4M
more efficient use of the reattor's full volume; moreoVer the reac-
tion volume indreases as the amount of the original sodium charge
decY#aeeag since, the spon e starts to grow above the level of the
molten reducer. Above 8009p howeverp this effeot is lessenedp and
the results of experiments conducted with the subsequent addition
of liquid Na differ little from those where all the Na is initially
addedo As regardB the fractional composition of the sponge, the au-
thors' data indicate that Ti conglomerates somewhat more in the fi-
ner fraotions at 650 - 7500 than is the case in reductions carried
out at > 80009 the respective contents of the ~-30-mesh traction
being 55 % and 64 %. But on the addiiion of the reducer at 650 -
7500 in the first half of the process - and at >-8000 in the se-
cond period -- the fractional composition Is the same as in tests

Investigating the eodiothermic D22b/D30i
performed solely at the latter temperaiureo There also appears to
be little difference in the fractional composition of sponge pro-
duced at high temperatures in the *boratory and sponge taken from
the sides and center of industrial reactorso The study of the tem-
perature distribution at three different levels in the reactor
shows that the gueous phase at first has the highest temperature;
however, it falls well below the temperature of the reaction pro-
ducts towards the end of both the first and second stages of the
process. The authors hence conclude that in low-temperature reac-
tions the reduction proceeds through the intermediate layer of the
titaneous chlorides. Above 8000 this layer expandep and the gradual
reduction of the T1.014 by Na occurs chiefly in the gaseous phase.
Processes of the prereduction by Na of the titanous chlorides dis-
solved in molten NaOl obtain a considerable development at the very
end of the reaction. There are 4 figures and 1 table.

The two-8tage method of the D228/D303
it arises as an Intermediate product In the first stage of the so-
diothermio process and ellminates the formation of finely-dispersed
Ti -- a possible source of metal contaminationa The work was done
In a laboratory reactor fitted with a distillallon crucible and a
feeder for the liquid reftAng-agent which was added either rapid-
ly (in 1 or 2 portions) or slowly in small suooessive increments.
The experimental data show that a homogeneous crystalline mass of
"black salt" may be obtained in all caseev particularly at 750 -
8500. The simultaneous addition of all*xeagenta gives a fine sponge.
But coarser dendritic material -- with crystal dimensions of up to
25 mm. and having the properties of "iodide" Ti (HB = 90) #- is for-
med on the addition of liquid Na to molten "b],Abk salt" at 650 -
7500. The slow rather than the rapid addition of Na also promotes
the growth of coarser Ti,, Stiuctures identified by the authors in-

the sodiothermic process and the considerable improvement of the
quality of the end-product. There are 4 figures.

ABSTRACT: A process drawing (D) Cu and Al tubing (T) on vertical and
horizontal draw blocks (B) is described. The vertical B have
overhead drive. A distinctive feature of the vertical and hori-
zontal B is the absence of undercut fillets. The T is wound on
the B in uniform turns by automatic translation of the dieholder
in the required direction by a special drive,
