ABSTRACT: The calorimeter described here makes it possible to colduct an experiment
isothermally and adiabatically, the latter condition being attained automatically by
a special apparatus maintaining an equal tpmperature within the calorimeter and In
the casing (maximum difference 0.01--0.20). The thermal process is conducted in a
hermetically sealed vessel of small volume (50 =3), well isolated from the external
medium. Measurements are taken with a thermistor of type IM-1 sensitive to 0-0005C-
Thermal effects are measured with an accuracy of 0.5-1.0%. Yu. Vaysberg

ABSTRACT; The interlocking of MolvJ)den with titanium or its alloys was determined
bv recording the attenuaClon of gamma irradiation during passage through various parts
oi tbe diffusion zone, Annealed Ti .md the]Mo specimen were pressed together, foliowed
by annealing at various temperatares (905-1210G) for 7-240 hours. From a ty-pic-'d
curve of a specimen annealed at 11006 for 40 hours it may be seen that the irradiation
intensity decreaBed by a factor of 15 during passage. ne formula relating the relative

results of this calculation showed that at concentrations of 50-90 at. % Ti the coefficient

ABSTRACT: A petrographic analysis of the two genetic types of
the Donbas coal is given. These types are the
clarain with xylovitrain-vitrain jelled substance, and
the clarain with homogeneous jelled substance. The
first type is characterized microttructurally by the
xylovitrain-vitrain nature of its jelled substance
made up of decayed vegetable tissue fragments which

xylovitrain-vitrain basic mass. The second type is characterized by
homogeneous structure of jelled substance which is represented b a
.ransparent basic mass produced by a complete decomposition of pTant
material in the process of jellification. At a given stage of coal
fixation, coal of the first type, when compared with that of the
second type, exhibits:1) a greater yield of volatile substances;
2) a better Paking capacity; 3) a higher sulfur content; 4) greater
heating value. The yield of volatile substances in Donbas coals is
associated both with degree of metamorphism and with genetic type.
Coal of the first genetic type (Donets Coal Institute classificaticn)
is "more completely reduced," while coal of the second type is "less
completely reduced." The distribution of the two types of coal in
Uhe coal strata follows a regular pattern. Each type either composes
the entire coal stratum or is associated with its upper of its lower
half. Both types of coal were formed in very wet swamps; however,
in coal of the first type decomposition of th6 plant material occurred
in a short time while in coal of the second type, decomposition
occurre over a longer period.

Table 1 shows that the coals of each individual deposit are
characterized by a certain value of said 4.ndex. On the basis
of the material investigated 5 carbonization can be
identifiod: 1) peat, 2) soft lignite, 3) W 5) hard lignites.
This division into 5 groups in proved righl. by chem-foal
characteristics (mathod according to references 4, 5). It
was found that with increased lignite carbcnization the coagula-
tion threshold of humic acid is lowered, the op~,iical densities
of these acids are raised, and their yields are reduced sub-
ject to certain rules. The throe lanto-nontione?. value-s may
also serve as objective parameters for the dotermiration of
the coalification group in n 8eries of ideni.4cal pt~txogryraphic

where A in the methine chain was substituted by Hp CH 3P or C2H5' while B was nub-
stituted by H, C 6H 5' ci_ 010H79 or 0(- 0 4H3S, It was found that in the series of
'dyes with non-substituted methine groups the 5P5'- diphenyl-p and espeoially the
56 '-di-c~-naphtbyloxacarbocyaninei3 (unlike the corresponding di-cx-thienyl deriva-
,tive) are more effective sensitizers than the simplest dye of thin range. In
shifting from the nonsubstituted methine gToup, dyes to the meao-alkyl-substitated,
ones, with phenyl and'q -thiwWl groups in positions 5 and 5, a sharp increase in
effectiveness was observed. The spectrophotometrio curves revealed that the
ethylates of the 9-othYl-5t5'-di-cf-thienyloxamwbocyanine and of the 9-etbyl-5151-
'diphenyloxacarbocyanineg unlike the corresponding derivatives of a nonsubstituted
methine chain dye, poesess a pronounced tendenoy to the formation of I-aggregates*
